THE CALIFORNIANS (dir: Jonathan Parker, PG) – Noah Wyle may not be winning Oscars like his former E.R. co-star George Clooney, but he’s not standing in a bread line either. Here he stars as an unsavory land developer who falls for a beautiful protester fighting his attempt to build McMansions on a sensitive piece of coastline. |

DEBBIE DOES DALLAS UNCOVERED (dir: Francis Hanly, Not Rated) – Since INSIDE DEEP THROAT got everyone interested in the nasty underbelly of 1970s porn, we now get another round of nastiness involving mob money, FBI stings, missing actresses and, obviously, a small mountain of cocaine.
![]() |
FINDING HOME (dir: Lawrence D. Foldes, PG-13) – A young woman must sort through her family’s difficult history when she returns to her Grandmother’s home on a remote island off the coast of the lovely state of Maine. |
![]() |
^GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. (dir: George Clooney, PG) – Apparently George Clooney was tired of people assuming he was just a smirking playboy in a nicely tailored suit. Because somehow in the past couple years he’s morphed into America’s filmmaking conscience. Our extremely charming and handsome conscience with an Italian villa.
![]() |
THE GRAFFITI ARTIST (dir: James Bolton, Not Rated) – A young graffiti tagger floats through the Pacific Northwest on a skateboard looking for meaning in this film festival favorite. |
![]() |
HAPPY HOUR (dir: Mike Bencivenga, Not Rated) – Anthony LaPaglia drinks away his nights in dark watering holes while avoiding the novel that he can’t seem to finish. Eric Stoltz plays his most reliable drinking companion.
![]() |
*A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (dir: David Cronenberg, R) – In David Cronenberg’s most mainstream film since THE FLY, we still get bursts of his trademark gruesome imagery, but the emphasis here is on the inner life of the characters. As a man may or may not be running from the past that has just shown up at his front door, Viggo Mortensen proves he can command the screen without the help of Hobbits. The supporting cast including Maria Bello, Ed Harris and William Hurt are all fantastic as well. |
![]() |
HOW TO LOSE YOUR LOVER (dir: Jordan Hawley, R) – We love Paul Schneider, the star of David Gordon Green’s GEORGE WASINGTON and ALL THE REAL GIRLS. But that doesn’t mean we have to love this dreary romantic comedy.
![]() |
MAREBITO (dir: Takashi Shimizu, R) – A Japanese cameraman becomes obsessed with a young woman he finds hidden in a subway tunnel. He quickly learns there is something terrifyingly inhuman about her but can’t let go of his need for her. From Takashi Shimizu, the director of THE GRUDGE. |
![]() |
THE OVERTURE (dir: Ittisoontorn Vichailak, Not Rated) – This Thai film tells the epic story of Luang Pradith Phairao, the legendary master of the Ranard-ek, Thailand’s traditional wooden xylophone.
![]() |
PEACE ONE DAY (dir: Jeremy Gilley, Not Rated) – Here’s a documentary about Jeremy Gilley, a young man who has been campaigning for years to have an annual global ceasefire day. Dude. Not gonna happen. |
![]() |
THE PRIZE WINNER OF DEFIANCE, OHIO (dir: Jane Anderson, PG-13) – Julianne Moore, bless her heart, plays real life super-mom Evelyn Ryan, who supported her 10 children by using her knack for writing to win jingle contests.
![]() |
SEARCHING FOR THE WRONG-EYED JESUS (dir: Andrew Douglas, Not Rated) – Singer-songwriter and weird dude Jim White takes the viewer on a tour of the gritty Deep South in this documentary that journeys through backwater truck stops, bars and prisons. |
![]() |
TAXI, AN ENCOUNTER (dir: Gabriela David, Not Rated) – I had an encounter with a movie called TAXI once and I still haven’t forgiven Queen Latifah. Luckily, this is just some Argentinean movie about a guy that steals a taxi and cruises around Buenos Aires all night.
![]() |
THIS THING OF OURS (dir: Danny Provenzano, Not Rated) – James Caan and a bunch of guys that would probably rather be on THE SOPRANOS star in this low budget mob heist flick. |
![]() |
THREE OF HEARTS (dir: Susan Kaplan, R) – It’s a marriage-a-trois in this documentary about Samantha, Steven and Sam, three New Yorkers who decide two partners are better than one.
![]() |
THE YEAR OF THE YAO (dir: Adam Del Deo / James D. Stern, PG) – Find out what it means to be a freakishly tall Chinese dude playing in the NBA in this doc about Yao Ming.
