JUNE 20 - JUNE 26, 2006

THE AGGRESSIVES (dir: Daniel Peddle, Not Rated) – “Aggressives” are a secret subculture of New York lesbians who pass as men. This intimate documentary has been hailed as a reverse PARIS IS BURNING. DAUGHTER OF KELTOUM (dir: Mehdi Charef, Not Rated) – A young Swiss woman travels to the rural Algerian village where she was born to meet her birth mother. There she encounters a culture mostly untouched by contemporary society but strangely familiar to her.
EIGHT BELOW (dir: Frank Marshall, PG) – I’m not quite sure how Paul Walker will manage to show off his abs in this Antarctica-set family adventure but I have no fear he’ll find a way. THE HILLS HAVE EYES (dir: Alexandre Aja, Unrated) – A family’s cross-country road trip takes a turn for the sucky when they run into some deranged and deformed hillbillies in the New Mexico desert. Wes Craven, director of the original, oversaw this remake directed by the genius who gave us HIGH TENSION.
*HOLLOW CITY (dir: Maria Joao Ganga, Not Rated) – One of the first films ever to emerge from the African nation Angola, HOLLOW CITY follows a war orphan attempting to make his way back to the village where he grew up. By turns heartbreaking and terrifying, this account of youth in turmoil will someday be mentioned in the same breath as PIXOTE, THE 400 BLOWS and CITY OF GOD. INFERNAL AFFAIRS III (dir: Wai Keung Lau / Siu Fai Mak, Not Rated) – Part three of the increasingly complex Hong Kong action trilogy is probably not for anyone who hasn’t seen at least the first one. But then, why wouldn’t you have seen INFERNAL AFFAIRS I? It’s the most satisfying cops vs. gangsters film of the 00s and you missed it.
^MY SASSY GIRL (dir: Jae-young Kwak, Not Rated) – The entire world is in love with this Korean movie about this guy’s nutso girlfriend. So why has it never been released in this country? We had to drive ourselves down to Chinatown in Manhattan to get an import copy just so you can see it before the undoubtedly inferior American remake comes out next year. NIGHT WATCH (dir: Timur Bekmambetov, R) – We’ve had an import of this Russian action/horror smash for over a year but here’s the official American release. Now with English dubbing!
THE PROMISE (dir: Kaige Chen, PG-13) – It’s the new HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS! Which was the new HERO! Which was the new CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON! You get the picture: stunning fight choreography, epic romance, lavish costumes, silly computer-generated effects… SYRIANA (dir: Stephen Gaghan, R) – I’m so sick of dang liberals spouting off myths such as “oil is not an endless resource” and “the temperature of the earth is increasing.” I paraphrase noted philosopher and humanitarian Ann Coulter when I say God gave us the Earth and he said to take it and rape it. Suck on that, Clooney!
THREE TIMES (dir: Hsiao-hsien Hou, Not Rated) – By now you should have at least heard of Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien. People in the know consider him to be one of the world’s greatest living filmmakers, but not many have seen his films. This one tells three different love stories set in three different time periods, but starring the same two actors. Will be a revelation for some; sleep-inducing for others. WHEN STAND UP STOOD OUT (dir: Fran Solomita, R) – The comedy scene in Boston in the early 80’s produced stars like Steven Wright, Denis Leary, Bobcat Goldthwait and Janeane Garofalo. This documentary mixes archive footage of early performances with recent interviews.
