AFRO-PUNK (dir: James Spooner, Not Rated) – If you’re one of the non-existent people in Brunswick interested in the African-American punk rock scene, this documentary about its history will fascinate and captivate you. We’ll have it waiting for you if you ever break through the fourth dimension or whatever. |

BASIC INSTINCT 2 (dir: Michael Caton-Jones, Unrated) – In this desperate sequel to her only hit, Sharon Stone unleashes an icy emotional reserve. But that’s probably just the Botox. Yikes.

GOODNIGHT JOSEPH PARKER (dir: Dennis Brooks, Not Rated) – If watching Steven Tyler of Aerosmith act means I don’t have to listen to him sing, then I guess that’s a bargain I’m willing to strike. On a brighter note, the brilliant Debi Mazar, finally getting noticed on ENTOURAGE, sinks her not-insubstantial teeth into the role of Rita, a sassy cocktail waitress. |

ON A CLEAR DAY (dir: Gaby Dellal, PG-13) – From the secret, underground lab on the Isle of Trite (where all nice British movies are formulated) comes this inspiring story of a man who’s determined to swim the English Channel to exorcise his demons. Luckily, it’s redeemed by the wonderful acting persons Peter Mullen and Brenda Blethyn. On a scale of CALENDAR GIRLS to SAVING GRACE, I give it THE FULL MONTY!

PROTOCOLS OF ZION (dir: Marc Levin, R) – Filmmaker Marc Levin started hearing rumors after 9/11 that no Jews died in the World Trade Center because they’d been warned about the attack ahead of time. Using this as a jumping off point, he explores the most persistent conspiracy theory of all time, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” a century old fabrication that contains the Jews’ alleged plot to rule the world. |

SIMON (dir: Eddy Terstall, Not Rated) – I guess it makes sense that this inspiring story of the lifelong friendship between a gay dentist and a straight drug dealer comes from Holland. It won 4 Golden Calves, whatever they may be. Brace yourself for the inevitable dreary American remake.

SOUNDLESS (dir: Mennan Yapo, Not Rated) – If you’re a ruthless and efficient German assassin, I’m going to advise you NOT to fall in love with the beautiful woman you’ve been assigned to exterminate. How many times do we have to go over this? |

^THE TALENT GIVEN US (dir: Andrew Wagner, Not Rated) – In this unusual film, director Andrew Wagner cast his mother, father and siblings as themselves and made a fictional road movie. Roger Ebert said it was “original, daring, intriguing and honest.” And you should be nice to him because he almost died last week.

TIRESIA (dir: Bertrand Bonelllo, Not Rated) – A transsexual prostitute. France. A crazed kidnapper. Second sight. That’s correct! It’s the long awaited film version of the Greek myth of Tiresias. |

*TRISTRAM SHANDY: A COCK & BULL STORY (dir: Michael Winterbottom, R) – British super-funny cool guy Steve Coogan stars in this wildly inventive adaptation of the notoriously unfilmable book, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Under the guidance of Michael Winterbottom, a spectacular cast including Jeremy Northam, Shirley Henderson, Kelly Macdonald, Ian Hart and Gillian Anderson veers quickly into a postmodern wilderness.
