AUGUST 1 - AUGUST 7, 2006

MRS. HARRIS (dir: Phyllis Nagy, Not Rated) – The considerable talents of Annette Bening and Ben Kingsley are lent to this made-for-HBO film about Jean Harris, the woman who killed the “Scarsdale Diet Doctor” in the early 1980s. THE SHAGGY DOG (dir: Brian Robbins, PG) – Tim Allen sinks to a new personal low in this uninspired remake of the Fred MacMurray family favorite. He’s not alone. Robert Downey, Jr., Danny Glover, Phillip Baker Hall and Kristen Davis all cashed paychecks for this stinker, too.
SHAKESPEARE BEHIND BARS (dir: Hank Rogerson, Not Rated) – You may not think a prison in Kentucky would be a great place to catch an electrifying version of Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST, but you’d be mistaken. That’s just what you’ll see in this moving documentary about locked up thespians. *V FOR VENDETTA (dir: James McTeigue, R) – You’ll get your money’s worth watching Natalie Portman have her luscious locks shaved off, but there’s a lot more to enjoy here. Most notably, you’ve got a spry and intelligent performance from Hugo Weaving (delivered entirely from behind a mask) as the titular V, a charismatic freedom fighter known to speak in flowery prose.
^WE JAM ECONO: THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN (dir: Tim Irwin, Not Rated) – One of America’s most important punk bands gets the documentary treatment with loads of rare live footage and interviews with admirers Flea, Jello Biafra, Grant Hart, Thurston Moore and many more. WHAT THE BLEEP!?: DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE (dir: Mark Vicente / Betsy Chasse / William Arntz, Not Rated) – I’m still thinking there’s something uncomfortably cult-like about these proceedings. If you try to talk to me about quantum physics, I will not look you in the eye.
WTC VIEW (dir: Brian Sloan, Not Rated) - A young man seeking a roommate to share his SoHo apartment finds the process complicated by the 9/11 attacks. In the aftermath, he interviews potential roomies that each have a personal story to tell about that unforgettable day.
