SEPTEMBER 12 - SEPTEMBER 18, 2006

BALLETS RUSSES (dir: Daniel Geller / Dayna Goldfine, Not Rated) – If you give a toss about ballet in any way you already know more about this documentary than I could tell you. BOTTOMS UP (dir: Erik MacArthur, R) – Paris Hilton takes time out of her busy schedule doing whatever it is she does to star as a spoiled Hollywood starlet in this fictional feature film.
BOXED (dir: Marion Comer, Not Rated) – It takes one good priest to stand up against IRA militants in this British thriller. ^THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU (dir: Cristi Puiu, R) – In this international hit comedy, a 63-year-old Romanian man gets lost in the shuffle when he goes to the hospital complaining of chest pains.
GLOOMY SUNDAY (dir: Rolf Schübel, Not Rated) – Set in Budapest during WWII, GLOOMY SUNDAY is a story of impossible love during wartime, as well as the story behind the legendary song. GOAL! THE DREAM BEGINS (dir: Danny Cannon, PG-13) – Remember how you tried to work up some enthusiasm for the World Cup this summer and failed? Well, prepare to do the same for this feel-good soccer epic.
THE GREAT NEW WONDERFUL (dir: Danny Leiner, R) – I can’t think of a better way to commemorate the 9/11 attacks than by renting this sensitive comedy following several New Yorkers before and after that fateful day. Directed by, I swear, the man responsible for giving the world DUDE, WHERE’S MY CAR? and HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE. HELLBENT (dir: Paul Etheredge-Ouzts, R) – Four friends fear they’re next on a serial killer’s list in this gay-themed slasher. Filmed on location at West Hollywood’s famous Halloween carnival.
I AM A SEX ADDICT (dir: Caveh Zahedi, Not Rated) – Imagine a really perverted Woody Allen movie and you’re in the ballpark of this loosely autobiographical film directed, produced, edited, written by and starring Caveh Zahedi. KILL THE POOR (dir: Alan Taylor, Not Rated) – When a young yuppie couple moves into a building on New York’s Lower East Side, they find it very difficult to get rid of the squatter who has taken up residence there.
KILL ZONE (dir: Wilson Yip, Not Rated) – If you’ve been waiting for the showdown of Hong Kong action legends Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen, you won’t be disappointed with this worldwide smash. LA PETITE JERUSALEM (dir: Karin Albou, Not Rated) – Two Jewish sisters living in a Paris suburb take radically different paths in their love lives. Teenager Laura questions her family’s strict religious beliefs and openly flirts with a Muslim man, while older, mature Mathilde suffers through a loveless marriage.

LOWER CITY (dir: Sérgio Machado, R) – This sexy Brazilian drama from the makers of THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES follows a love triangle between three friends set against the lusty backdrop of Salvador de Bahia. *LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN (dir: Paul McGuigan, R) – While it may have the most unfortunate title of any movie this year, this Tarantino-esque thriller makes up for it with oodles of clever dialogue and plot twists. Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley are warring crime bosses of whom Josh Hartnett accidentally provokes ire.
THE MAID (dir: Kelvin Tong, Not Rated) – A Filipino woman arrives in Singapore to work as a maid and everyone fails to warn her that during the seventh month of the Chinese calendar the dead freely walk the Earth. MIRACLE MATCH (dir: David Anspaugh, PG) – From the creators of RUDY and HOOSIERS comes this true story of a ragtag group of American soccer players who pulled off a stunning upset against England at the 1950 World Cup.
THE WHORE'S SON (dir: Michael Sturminger, Not Rated) – A teenage boy learns about his mother’s secret career in this German import. THE WILD (dir: Steve 'Spaz' Williams, G) – Some zoo animals escape their confines and find the outside world to be an intimidating place. Like MADAGASCAR only with a different title. Thanks Disney!
