SEPTEMBER 19 - SEPTEMBER 25, 2006

CROSSING THE BRIDGE (dir: Fatih Akin, Not Rated) – The director of HEAD-ON takes a look at his Turkish roots in this documentary that explores the vibrant musical culture of Istanbul. THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON (dir: Jeff Feuerzeig, PG-13) – His songs have been covered by Beck, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth and Wilco. He was BFF with Kurt Cobain. He’s Daniel Johnston, one of the most original musical talents in recent memory. He also happens to suffer from manic depression which has led him to spend the last 30 years in and out of mental institutions.
FABULOUS! THE STORY OF QUEER CINEMA (dir: Lisa Ades / Lesli Klainberg, Not Rated) – Picking up where THE CELLULOID CLOSET left off, this Independent Film Channel production calls on talking heads such as John Waters, Todd Haynes, Alan Cumming and John Cameron Mitchell to discuss how Hollywood has progressed into the age of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. FUSE (dir: Pjer Žalica, Not Rated) – A small town in Bosnia tries to band together to prepare for a visit by Bill Clinton, but are foiled at every turn by the deranged former police chief and a ruthless black marketer.
GO FOR ZUCKER (dir: Dani Levy, Not Rated) – In this wacky German comedy (I know), a downtrodden pool shark can only claim his mother’s inheritance if he can convince his Orthodox brother that he hasn’t forsaken Judaism. Which, of course, he has. *HARD CANDY (dir: David Slade, R) – A 30-something man approaches a 14-year-old girl in an internet chat room but when they meet in the real world, he’s the one who should be worried. In this riveting, superbly acted thriller, things are never what they appear.
JOHNNY WAS (dir: Mark Hammond, R) – Vinnie “The Hardman” Jones stars as a man on the run from his violent past. Unfortunately, he moves in next door to a Jamaican gangster who happens to be the sworn enemy of his old boss - who is played by Roger Daltrey. Lennox Lewis, the boxer, also co-stars. LET’S GET FRANK (dir: Bart Everly, Not Rated) – Openly gay Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank is the subject of this documentary. He was one of Bill Clinton’s fiercest defenders during his impeachment hearings, which are captured in their full hilarity here.
LOVERBOY (dir: Kevin Bacon, R) – Kyra Sedgwick stars as an unhinged woman obsessed with having the perfect child in this thriller directed by her hubby, Kevin Bacon. ^THE PROPOSITION (dir: John Hillcoat, R) – Like DEADWOOD, but wish the characters weren’t so genteel, so well-groomed, so not Australian? Then you’ll love this nasty, ugly Aussie Western written by gloom-rocker Nick Cave.
STAY ALIVE (dir: William Brent Bell, Unrated) – Remember how excited everybody was when HOUSE OF WAX came out and you just knew that Paris Hilton was gonna get slaughtered in a funny and brutal manner? That’s how I feel about Frankie Muniz in this low-budget slasher. STICK IT (dir: Jessica Bendinger, PG-13) – Replace cheerleading with gymnastics and this movie is BRING IT ON, minus the clever. Probably owing a favor to a favorite niece, Jeff Bridges stars.
10TH & WOLF (dir: Bobby Moresco, R) – Cyclops from X-MEN plays a marine who heads home to South Philly to sort out some family business. Since the family business is the mafia, expect a lot of swearing and violent behavior. Giovanni Ribisi, Dennis Hopper and Val Kilmer co-star. UNIFORM (dir: Diao Yinan, Not Rated) – A young man with financial troubles begins impersonating a police officer in order to extort money and impress the girl he likes. The problem is, she’s also leading a double life… as an escort. This sly comedy displays the same gentle humor as director Diao Yinan’s last international hit, SHOWER.
