NOVEMBER 7 - NOVEMBER 13, 2006

BATTLE OF THE BRAVE (dir: Jean Beaudin, PG-13) – Warm up some poutine and enjoy this spirited adventure starring Gerard Depardieu, Tim Roth and Colm Meaney set in 18th-Century Quebec. THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER (dir: Andrew Berends, Not Rated) – Yet another documentary about Iraq, this one told from the perspective of a teenager seeking revenge for his brother’s death.
*CARS (dir: John Lasseter, G) – Pixar scores again and continues to bang the nail into hand drawn animation’s coffin. This insta-classic showcases fine vox from Owen Wilson and Paul Newman. FREAK OUT (dir: Christian James, Not Rated) – In the spirit of the early low-budget Peter Jackson films like BAD TASTE and DEAD-ALIVE, this gross-out comedy follows two friends as they plot to turn their escaped mental institution buddy into a splatter movie superstar.
THE KID & I (dir: Penelope Spheeris, PG-13) – I’ve gotten this far without learning life lessons from sappy Tom Arnold movies and I’m not about to start now. LITTLE MAN (dir: Keenen Ivory Wayans, PG-13 – Those crazy Wayans brothers follow up WHITE CHICKS with an even wackier comedy about a vertically challenged criminal on the run who gets mistaken for a baby and is adopted. Let the lactation jokes begin!
THE MOVIE HERO (dir: Brad T. Gottfried, Not Rated) – Jeremy Sisto from SIX FEET UNDER stars as an eccentric young man who believes his entire life is being watched by an imaginary audience. If you enjoy independent comedies with a quirky sense of humor, or if you simply enjoy making fun of people with mental illness, you’ll love THE MOVIE HERO! POPULATION 436 (dir: Michelle Maclaren, R) – Jeremy Sisto from SIX FEET UNDER stars in this thriller as a federal investigator sent to a small town where everyone is a little too caught up in their religion… and murdering outsiders.
PUSHER TRILOGY (dir: Nicolas Winding Refn, Not Rated) – Hard-edged drug culture probably isn’t what springs to mind when you think of Denmark but you may change your mind after seeing the tales of small time Copenhagen dealer Frank. SHADOWBOXER (dir: Lee Daniels, R) – Everyone else may be excited by Helen Mirren playing various queens lately but I’m stoked for her turn as a deadly assassin who’s romancing Cuba Gooding, Jr., another deadly assassin who is also her step-son, and pulling off one last hit before succumbing to terminal cancer. Yes!
THE SOPRANOS: SEASON 6, PART 1 (dir: David Chase, Not Rated) – ANALYZE THIS rip-off about a gangster who goes to see a shrink. SUNDOWNING (dir: Jim Cole, Not Rated) – Three generations of Maine fishermen on a small island fight for a woman’s attention while fighting with Canadians over fishing borders. Throw in some Alzheimer’s and you’ve got one heckuva humdinger.
^TAKE MY EYES (dir: Iciar Bollain, Not Rated) – A Spanish couple’s disintegrating marriage is wrenchingly detailed in this award-winning film from acclaimed director Icia Bollain. TOTALLY AWESOME (dir: Neal Brennan, Not Rated) – The supremely bad fashions, music, hairstyles and dancing of the 1980s are mercilessly parodied in this spoof starring Chris Kattan and Tracy Morgan.
WORDPLAY (dir: Patrick Creadon, PG) – We’ve now had hit documentaries about spelling bees and crossword puzzles. When is someone going to do an in-depth look at the cult of those who worship at the alter of word searches?
