ALL YOU’VE GOT (dir: Neema Barnette, PG-13) – Tweenage girls and absolutely no one else on Earth will enjoy this bombastic volleyball comedy. |
![]() |
BEERFEST (dir: Jay Chandrasekhar, Unrated) – The Broken Lizard comedy troupe, the ones responsible for SUPER TROOPERS, head to Germany to take part in an underground drinking competition.
![]() |
CHRISTMAS IN THE CLOUDS (dir: Kate Montgomery, PG) – In this future holiday favorite, the staff of a mountain resort brace themselves for a surprise visit by a reviewer from a major travel guide. |
![]() |
AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH 2: EVENING HARDER (dir: J.M. Kenny, Unrated) – Could someone please give me a cactus so I can poke Kevin Smith in the face in with it?
![]() |
HOW TO EAT FRIED WORMS (dir: Bob Dolman, PG) – Kids will love this adaptation of the classic book which garnered surprisingly strong reviews from critics - except in Malaysia where it was banned by the government. Really. |
![]() |
IDLEWILD (dir: Bryan Barber, R) – Andre 3000 and Big Boi from Outkast star in their first movie and it’s a doozy. Set in a swinging nightclub in the South during Prohibition, IDLEWILD also stars Terence Howard, Ving Rhames and Ben Vereen.
![]() |
KEBAB CONNECTION (dir: Sinan Akkus / Anno Saul, Not Rated) – In this wacky comedy from Germany (as if they make any other kind), a young Turkish immigrant must help his uncle’s fast food stall succeed against the rival Greek fast food stall, as well as fend off the mafia and follow his dream of making a kung fu movie. |
![]() |
LOOK BOTH WAYS (dir: Sarah Watt, PG-13) – In this wildly original Australian dramedy, a lonely artist and a photojournalist meet in the aftermath of a train crash and set out on a journey exploring the mysteries of fate and coincidence.
![]() |
LOUDQUIETLOUD: A FILM ABOUT THE PIXIES (dir: Steven Cantor / Matthew Galkin, Not Rated) – This documentary follows legendary college rockers The Pixies on their unexpected and joyful reunion tour of 2004. As a fan, I can report that the 3 shows I saw on that tour were revelatory, life-affirming and quite possibly magical. Really, it’s just nice to see everyone getting along so well. |
![]() |
A LOVE TO HIDE (dir: Christian Faure, Not Rated) – Two young gay lovers hide a Jewish girl from the Nazis in 1942 Paris. When one of their brothers learns of their deviant lifestyle it threatens all of them.
![]() |
MAD COWGIRL (dir: Gregory Hatanaka, Not rated) –Health inspector Therese suspects her questionable relationship with her brother has led to her being infected with Mad Cow disease. She breaks off her affair with a creepy televangelist and sets out on a surreal journey in this movie that seems like it might be trying a bit too hard to be an instant cult classic. |
![]() |
*MIAMI VICE (dir: Michael Mann, Unrated) – Nobody seemed too crazy about Michael Mann’s drastic rethinking of his iconic 80s TV series when it had its theatrical run last summer, but I thought it was totally legit. Much kudos to Colin Farrell for one of the most coked-out and insane performances in decades. Dude is unhinged!
![]() |
THE OH IN OHIO (dir: Billy Kent, R) – Parker Posey, Paul Rudd and Liza Minelli? Are you kidding me?!? |
![]() |
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST (dir: Gore Verbinski, PG-13) – I haven’t heard much about this seafaring treat, but I hear that young actor Johnny Depp is going places. Keep an eye on him.
![]() |
PUCKER UP: THE FINE ART OF WHISTLING (dir: Kate Davis / David Heilbroner, Not Rated) – I’m sick of mockumentaries, but documentaries that play like mockumentaries I’m still totally cool with. Whistling? Really? |
![]() |
PULSE (dir: Jim Sonzero, Unrated) – I know you’re over the whole Japanese horror thing, but this remake of the ghosts haunting people through the internet is actually pretty freaky. And it stars Kristen Bell a.k.a. Veronica Mars.
![]() |
QUEENS (dir: Manuel Gomez Pereira, R) – This Spanish film borrows several actresses from the harem of Pedro Almodovar for this story of overbearing mothers attending to their sons’ impending nuptials. |
![]() |
^SOMETHING LIKE HAPPINESS (dir: Bohdan Slama, Not Rated) – This Czech film about the complicated relationships between several denizens of a dreary apartment block in a dreary small industrial city won the Best Actress award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and on top of that it’s this month’s Film Movement selection.
![]() |
20 CENTIMETERS (dir: Ramon Salazar, Not Rated) – This whimsical Spanish film about a narcoleptic pre-op tranny prostitute getting ready for the big snip has been repeatedly, and probably a bit redundantly, compared to Almodovar. |
![]() |
THE WILD BLUE YONDER (dir: Werner Herzog, Not Rated) – When German madman extraordinaire Werner Herzog set out to make this off-kilter sci-fi movie he enlisted NASA to provide him with mind blowing footage from deep space and the depths of Antarctica.
