NEW MOVIES!  MARCH 20 - MARCH 26, 2007

BLOOD DIAMOND (dir: Edward Zwick, R) – Leonardo DiCaprio tries out a dodgy Afrikaner accent as a smuggler caught up in Djimon Hounsou’s search for his missing son…and a priceless pink diamond. Jennifer Connelly co-stars as some do-gooder something or other.
THE BOTHERSOME MAN (dir: Jens Lien, Not Rated) – This month’s Film Movement selection comes from Norway, where it won numerous awards including three of their Academy Awards. It’s the story of a man with no memory who has arrived in a strange city that he can’t seem to navigate or escape from.
^THE BRIDESMAID (dir: Claude Chabrol, Not Rated) – Claude Chabrol, France’s Hitchcock, spits out another thriller of the highest order. At the wedding of his sister, a man meets a mysterious young woman whom he quickly falls for but, fear not, she has a big secret.
BURNING ANNIE (dir: Van Flesher, R) – A young man cynical about romance assumes the worst when he starts dating the girl of his dreams. Will his wariness put a damper on their newfound romance?
ERAGON (dir: Stefen Angmeir, PG) – THE LORD OF THE RINGS films were about as good as you could ask movies with digital dragons in them to be. So can’t we just accept that as the pinnacle and quit watching junk like this and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA?
EVERYONE’S HERO (dir: Christopher Reeve / Daniel St. Pierre / Colin Brady, G) – This baseball themed CGI film was directed by Christopher Reeve shortly before he died, but it’s of zero interest to anyone over the age of eleven.
GOING TO PIECES (dir: Jeff McQueen, Unrated) – Like an updated TERROR IN THE AISLES, this documentary is really just a compendium of classic horror movie clips.
LOVE WRECKED (dir: Randal Kleiser, PG) – The director of THE BLUE LAGOON essentially remakes that movie, but instead of an R rating and Brooke Shields we get a PG rating and the freakishly large-faced Amanda Bynes.
MENDY (dir: Adam Vardy, Not Rated) – A young Hasidic Jew in New York struggles to break free of his ultra-orthodox roots and find a place in the secular world.
THE NATIVITY STORY (dir: Catherine Hardwicke, PG) – It might seem a little early for Christmas but it’s certainly not too early to learn all about where the beautiful baby Jesus came from.
*THE NIGHT OF TRUTH (dir: Fanta Regina Nacro, Not Rated) – In an unnamed African country, warring factions have finally put years of atrocities behind them. But the celebration to commemorate the truce will be a test of their desire for peace.
ROCKY BALBOA (dir: Sylvester Stallone, PG) – Sylvester Stallone breaks out the growth hormones and whatever else was in Lance Armstrong’s protein shake for one more turn in the ring. And it’s not as bad as you think!
SEVEN SWORDS (dir: Tsui Hark, Not Rated) – Legendary Hong Kong director Tsui Hark combines top-notch action choreography with epic storytelling and a cast of martial arts superstars like Donnie Yen for this classy production that opened last year’s Venice Film Festival.
SOME THINGS THAT STAY (dir: Gail Harvey, Not Rated) – A teenage girl must cope with her family constantly moving around and her mother’s worsening illness in this drama set in rural 1950’s America.
WONDROUS OBLIVION (dir: Paul Morrison, PG) – It’s BILLY ELLIOT. With cricket. And Delroy Lindo doing a radical Jamaican accent.
