NEW MOVIES!  MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 2007

CANDY (dir: Neil Armfield, R) – Being addicted to heroin is probably not much fun, but if you can do it and still be really attractive like Heath Ledger, it probably eases the strain a bit.
*CHILDREN OF MEN (dir: Alfonso Cuarón, R) – Oh, if you didn’t know already. The future sucks.
COLOR ME KUBRICK (dir: Brian W. Cook, Not Rated) – John Malkovich goes so far over the top as a gay British man who successfully scammed people into thinking he was Stanley Kubrick that he’s still orbiting the Earth.
COMEBACK SEASON (dir: Bruce McCulloch, PG-13) – Ray Liotta stars in this inspiring family sports movie. Yes, that Ray Liotta.
^THE CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER (dir: Yimou Zhang, R) – Zhang Yimou went all out on this lavish period production about betrayal in a royal family. Stars Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li helped make it one of the biggest box office hits in Chinese history.
DEEP SEA (dir: Howard Hall, G) – Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet were kind enough to narrate this fascinating look at a bunch of junk that lives in the ocean.
EL CORTEZ (dir: Stephen Purvis, R) – Lou Diamond Phillips makes his first impression on anyone anywhere since LA BAMBA as an autistic man working all the angles in the underbelly of Reno.
FUNNY MONEY (dir: Leslie Greif, Not Rated) – In case you were wondering, Chevy Chase is still pretty good at not being funny.
HAPPY FEET (dir: George Miller, PG) – If I was tripping on mescaline, I might be interested in watching a bunch of animated birds lip-synch Prince songs, but unfortunately I’m not.
ILLUSION (dir: Michael A. Goorjian, Not Rated) – Kirk Douglas makes a rare film appearance as an elderly Hollywood director looking back over his life and wondering what became of the son he abandoned.
MOTHERLAND AFGHANISTAN (dir: Sedika Mojadidi, Not Rated) – This documentary follows an Afghan born doctor who returns to his homeland after the U.S. invasion in order to help rebuild and modernize the hospitals.
PERVERT! (dir: Jonathan Yudis, Not Rated) – This outrageous ode to the master of soft-core Russ Meyers may be short on intelligence, good intentions and class, but it’s overflowing with bosoms!
PREMIUM (dir: Pete Chatmon, R) – A young black actor tires of being offered stereotypical thug roles and retreats to his mother’s house to decide if he really wants to pursue a career that seems to only humiliate him. At the same time he is reunited with his ex-fiancée and tries to win her back.
PRINCESAS (dir: Fernando León de Aranoa, Not Rated) – The best thing about prostitutes in Madrid? They really hang together when the going gets rough.
THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS (dir: Gabriele Muccino, PG-13) – It’s basically KRAMER VS. KRAMER, only Meryl Streep never comes back. And Dustin Hoffman needs a job really badly.
ROMAN (dir: Angela Bettis, Not Rated) – Creepy actress Angela Bettis makes her directorial debut with this eerie story of a creep obsessed with a female neighbor. The female neighbor is played by Kristen Bell a.k.a. VERONICA MARS and seriously, if anything happens to her…
SEX SELLS (dir: Jonathan Liebert, R) – I guess it was about time for a mockumentary involving the adult film industry. And if you were concerned about whether GREASE 2 star and DANCE FEVER host Adrian Zmed was still alive, he is.
SHUTTER (dir: Banjong Pisanthanakun / Parkpoom Wongpoom, Not Rated) – Maybe in Thailand it’s still cool to rip-off THE RING, but here in civilization that’s a bit played out.
TURISTAS (dir: John Stockwell, R) – What would happen if we took essentially every idea from HOSTEL and changed the setting to Brazil? Oh, yes. I see. It would be lame.
20 FINGERS (dir: Mania Akbari, Not Rated) – Seventeen vignettes compose this highly controversial look at male-female relationships in Iran from Abbas Kiarostami collaborator Mania Akbari.
VAN WILDER: THE RISE OF TAJ (dir: Mort Nathan, Not Rated) – What we need is that HAROLD & KUMAR sequel we were promised would come out soon. What we don’t need is Kal Penn slumming in this lame spin-off of a movie I don’t think anyone liked in the first place.
