NEW MOVIES!  APRIL 3 - APRIL 9, 2007

AURORA BOREALIS (dir: James C.E. Burke, R) – Joshua Jackson plays an aimless twentysomething who develops a deep bond with his ailing grandfather played by Donald Sutherland.
BACKSTAGE (dir: Emmanuelle Bercot, Unrated) – A teenage girl in a bleak town in France gets the chance to meet her favorite pop star but soon discovers that fame is just a different set of problems.
BLACK CHRISTMAS (dir: Glen Morgan, Unrated) – This remake of a nearly forgotten 70’s semi-classic hasn’t got much going for it. Buffy fans will enjoy the Michelle Trachtenberg element though.
CHARLOTTE'S WEB (dir: Gary Winick, G) – Dax Fanning hangs out with some animals voiced by Julia Roberts, Steve Buscemi, Robert Redford, John Cleese, Kathy Bates and, why not, Oprah.
COME EARLY MORNING (dir: Joey Lauren Adams, R) – Ashley Judd returns to her indie roots as a lonely woman who seems to get further away from love with every hangover and one night stand. This sensitive and sturdy little picture marks the directorial debut of actress Joey Lauren Adams.
COPYING BEETHOVEN (dir: Agnieszka Holland, PG-13) – Ed Harris goes nuclear as a certain deaf Austrian in this biopic that focuses on the creation of his crowning achievement, the Ninth Symphony.
COWBOY JUNCTION (dir: Gregory Christian, Not Rated) – Ladies, when your husband brings home a beefcake cowboy with no shirt on to work as your new handyman, something’s up.
DARK RIDE (dir: Craig Singer, R) – A madman escapes from an insane asylum and returns to the theme park where he committed his atrocities. Luckily, many teenagers are lined up to be his next victims.
DEATH OF A PRESIDENT (dir: Gabriel Range, R) – This pseudo-documentary uses stock footage and special effects to imagine the assassination of George W. Bush. It was hugely controversial at every film festival it played, presumably because it forced the notion of Dick Cheney assuming the presidency into everyone’s unsuspecting brains. Chilling.
DREAMLAND (dir: James P. Lay, Not Rated) – This thriller about mysterious goings on in the Nevada desert promises to be THE X-FILES meets THE TWILIGHT ZONE, but we’re more interested in the fact that the director is from Brunswick.
THE GODDESS OF 1967 (dir: Clara Law, Not Rated) – A Japanese man travels to Australia to purchase a rare car and ends up taking a bizarre journey through the outback with a mysterious girl.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD (dir: Robert De Niro, R) – Matt Damon stars in this classy thriller about the birth of the CIA. A snazzy supporting cast includes Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, Angelina Jolie, and the film’s director Robert DeNiro.
INTO THE FIRE (dir: Michael Phelan, R) – Three strangers’ lives intersect and entwine after an unthinkable tragedy in this drama starring Sean Patrick Flannery.
MY COUNTRY, MY COUNTRY (dir: Laura Poitras, Not Rated) – This documentary follows the political candidacy of a Sunni doctor in Iraq’s 2005 election. Along the way we meet and explore the lives of everyone from U.N. officials to Australian security guards and villagers.
OPAL DREAM (dir: Peter Cattaneo, PG) – A little Australian girl makes her brother help her find her missing imaginary friends. And that, apparently, is an entire movie.
SISTER ROSE'S PASSION (dir: Oren Jacoby, Not Rated) – This Academy Award-nominated documentary follows Sister Rose Thering, who has made it her life’s work in the Catholic church to eradicate anti-Semitism.
SUN KISSED (dir: Patrick McGuinn, Not Rated) – A young writer’s retreat at a snazzy house in the desert is disrupted by the studly on-site handyman who may or may not be a serial killer.
3 NEEDLES (dir: Thom Fitzgerald, Not Rated) – The worldwide realities of AIDS are explored in this globe-spanning drama that visits China, Africa and Canada and stars Lucy Liu, Stockard Channing and Chloe Sevigny.
TRUDELL (dir: Heather Rae, Not Rated) – This fascinating and important documentary uses the suspicious deaths of activist John Trudell’s family as a jumping off point to explore the history of the American Indian movement.
29TH & GAY (dir: Carrie Preston, Not Rated) – A guy reaches a crossroads on his 29th birthday when he realizes the fame, fortune and love he seeks has eluded him.
*VOLVER (dir: Pedro Almodóvar, R) – Penelope Cruz turns in the performance of her career as a put-upon wife with a corpse in the freezer and the possible ghost of her mother haunting her hometown. Pedro Almodóvar continues his streak of triumphs with this funny and touching ode to all that is woman. Is there a better film director on Earth right now?
^WOMAN IS THE FUTURE OF MAN (dir: Sang-soo Hong, Not Rated) – Emerging global talent Sang-soo Hong impresses with this darkly comic tale of two friends on the lookout for romance. Compared to everyone from Antonioni to Kurosawa, he is one of the most boldly cerebral directors to come out of the Korean new wave.
