NEW MOVIES!  APRIL 24 - APRIL 30, 2007

THE AXIS OF EVIL COMEDY TOUR (dir: Maz Jobrani, Not Rated) – It’s like Albert Brooks’ LOOKING FOR COMEDY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD in reverse when four Arab-American stand-up comics do some politically-charged bits for our entertainment.
BORN TO FIGHT (dir: Panna Rittikrai, Not Rated) – It’s the new craze! Super-charged Thai action movies! It doesn’t have that guy from ONG-BOK and THE PROTECTOR in it, but it’s the same thing!
CAFFEINE (dir: John Cosgrove, R) – Mena Suvari. Katherine Heigl. Breckin Meyer. A coffee shop. That’s all anyone who’d be interested in this movie needs to know.
CODE NAME: THE CLEANER (dir: Les Mayfield, PG-13) – Eliza read the description on the back of this Cedric the Entertainer janitor/spy comedy and said, “This looks SOOOO stupid!” So will you.
*DEJA VU (dir: Tony Scott, PG-13) – This nutso time-gap action-thriller starring Denzel Washington is WAY more Bruckheimer than FREQUENCY and THE LAKE HOUSE combined.
EVERYTHING YOU WANT (dir: Ryan Little, PG) – Here’s an unambitious trifle of a romantic comedy with possibly two things going for it: 1) it’s based on a play and 2) it’s got nobody you’ve ever heard of in it and the studios decided to release it anyway.
.45 (dir: Gary Lennon, R) – Are you ready for a high-octane remake of Abel Ferrara’s MS. 45? It’s got Milla Jovovich as the wronged woman on a murderous rampage, so of course you are!
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM (dir: Shawn Levy, PG) – We’re all in agreement here at the store that Ben Stiller doesn’t work enough. If there’s a movie made in 2007 without him in it, we’ll be really upset.
OPEN WATER 2: ADRIFT (dir: Hans Horn, R) – Some human shark-bait jumps off a boat into the middle of the ocean without dropping the ladder first and can’t get back into the boat. Bon Appetit!
^THE QUEEN (dir: Stephen Frears, PG-13) – I mean, it’s British and everybody loves it, so Bart should hate this movie, right? Wrong! And he really liked VOLVER, too. I think he’s getting soft.
SLINGSHOT (dir: Jay Alaimo, R) – Julianna Marguilies is a sexy soccer mom who is seduced by greasy con man David Arquette. Good production values.
10 ITEMS OR LESS (dir: Brad Silberling, R) – It’s LOST IN TRANSLATION, only set in an LA bodega with SEX AND LUCIA’s Paz Vega in the ScarJo role, and Morgan Freeman with earrings standing in for Bill Murray.
THREAT (dir: Matt Pizzolo, Not Rated) – Take KIDS and add an edgy hardcore punk hip-hop soundtrack and lots of brutal violence and you’ve got this controversial cult sensation in the making.
THR3E (dir: Robby Henson, PG-13) – Evidently some Christians were offended by the producers of SE7EN making something so unwholesome out of their deadly sins, so they responded with this faith-filled PG-13 serial killer movie.
THE TROUBLE WITH MEN AND WOMEN (dir: Tony Fisher, Not Rated) – The Brits with their BRIDGET JONES’ DIARYs and LOVE ACTUALLYs make some of this town’s favorite romantic comedies. Here’s a more realistic variation on the formula which attempts to replace the clichés with equally sweet romantic truisms.
TSUNAMI: THE AFTERMATH (dir: Bharat Nalluri, Not Rated) – Luckily HBO, with this two-part miniseries starring Toni Collette and Tim Roth, is here to remind us how our Gulf Coast disaster was small potatoes compared the devastation in Thailand.
UNREST (dir: Jason Todd Ipson, R) – It’s rumored that this ghost story set in a Gross Anatomy classroom is the first US horror movie to use a real human cadaver. True or not, I don’t wanna see that!
UNTIL DEATH (dir: Simon Fellows, R) – I know, I know. You’re saying, “Who’s letting Jean-Claude Van Damme continue to make movies?” But this one, where he plays a smack-addict cop, is supposed to be a radical departure for him.
THE WEDDING PARTY (dir: Dominique Deruddere, Not Rated) – Based on a comic book, this German satire is so bloody and over-the-top that we Americans might even enjoy it.
WICKED LITTLE THINGS (dir: J.S. Cardone, Unrated) – What could be better than a gory little zombie movie? A gory little CHILD zombie movie!
