BIG DREAMS IN LITTLE HOPE (dir: Erin Greenwell, Not Rated) – In this lesbian buddy comedy, a reporter and her camerawoman encounter numerous comedic problems while covering a story in a small town. |
THE BREED (dir: Nick
Mastandrea, R) – Michelle Rodriguez and Taryn Manning think they’ve got it made when they head off for a vacation on a deserted island. Unfortunately, the island in question is inhabited by genetically mutated dogs that have a taste for human blood. |
*DORM (dir: Songyas
Sugmakanan, Not Rated) – In this Thai horror film, a young boy is sent against his will to a boarding school that turns out to be very haunted. Sounds like typical Asian horror, right? Well, somehow DORM bagged the ultra-prestigious Glass Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival. |
FLIRTING WITH ANTHONY (dir: Christian
Calson, Not Rated) – In this “kaleidoscope of ultraviolence” a dude with a dark past hits the road with his girlfriend and encounters malevolent drag queens and pink haired bullies. |
FREE ZONE (dir: Amos
Gitai, Not Rated) – Natalie Portman plays an American living in Israel who meets a witty female taxi driver and proceeds to help her take care of her husband’s debt with a mysterious
Palestinian. |
HANNIBAL RISING (dir: Peter Webber, Unrated) – If you thought the Hannibal Lector story had been fully told and that there was nothing clever or remotely entertaining left to salvage from this series, you were completely correct. |
THE HAWK IS DYING (dir: Julian Goldberger, Not Rated) – Paul Giamatti stars as a Floridian who uses his passion for birds to transcend the normalcy of his everyday life while also caring for Michael Pitt, his autistic nephew. This thoughtful indie kind of fell through the cracks theatrically but will hopefully find an audience now. |
MY BROTHER (dir: Anthony Lover, PG-13) – Two impoverished brothers struggle against the odds in this suspiciously inspirational-looking drama featuring Vanessa Williams and Tatum O’Neal. |
OFF
SCREEN (dir: Pieter Kuijpers, Not Rated) – Dutch stars Jan Decleir and Jeroen Krabbe head up this thriller in which a deranged man takes an office building hostage at the request of the voices in his head. |
RESISTANCE (dir: Todd
Komarnicki, R) – Bill Paxton plays a fighter pilot shot down during WWII in Belgium. Julia Ormond plays the beautiful woman who shelters him and, get this, falls in love with him. |
SUICIDE KILLERS (dir: Pierre
Rehov, Not Rated) – Find out what makes suicide bombers tick in this explosive new documentary. |
WIDE AWAKE (dir: Alan Berliner, Not Rated) – This autobiographical documentary takes a tour through director Alan Berliner’s lifelong struggle with insomnia. Through home movies, dream visualizations and interviews with sleep specialists we come to understand how a person can feel “jet-lagged in their own time zone.” |
