NEW MOVIES!
JUNE 19 - JUNE 25, 2007
THE ABANDONED (dir: Nacho
Cerda, R) – Just because you inherit a haunted house in a desolate Russian forest doesn’t mean you’re obligated to accept it. |
BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA (dir: Gabor
Csupo, PG) – The classic book gets an expensive movie adaptation and now, thanks to oodles of CGI, kids will never have to use their imaginations again! |
THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (dir: David Lee Fisher, Not Rated) – Writer/director David Lee Fisher refers to his updating of the horror classic as a “remix” not a “remake.” Even more troubling, one of the most famous films of the silent era is now burdened with clunky dialogue and goofy special effects. |
CLOSE TO HOME (dir: Dalia Hager / Vidi
Bilu, Not Rated) – Performing their mandatory military service, two Israeli women are thrown directly into the quagmire of Jerusalem, where they find their values completely at odds with their duty. |
GINOSTRA (dir: Manuel
Pradal, R) – Harvey Keitel and Andie MacDowell star in this monumentally forgettable thriller about an FBI agent assigned to protect the son of an assassinated Mafia don. Like a cheap bottle of wine, this has been sitting on the shelf since 2002. |
GRAY MATTERS (dir: Sue Kramer, PG-13) – Heather Graham finds herself falling for her brother’s new girlfriend in this
edgy-ish rom-com that also stars Alan Cumming and Sissy Spacek. |
^GRBAVICA: THE LAND OF MY DREAMS (dir: Jasmila
Zbanic, Not Rated) – That unpronounceable word in the title is the neighborhood in Sarajevo that our protagonist and her young daughter live. When the daughter becomes interested in the whereabouts of her supposedly dead father, the mother has a lot of explaining to do. |
THE LIFE AND HARD TIMES OF GUY TERRIFICO (dir: Michael
Mabbott, R) – Kris Kristofferson, Levon Helm and other music luminaries appear in this documentary about legendary country legend Guy
Terrifico. Did I mention that Guy Terrifico never existed? |
*LONGFORD (dir: Tom Hooper, Not Rated) – Samantha Morten stars in this acclaimed HBO film as notorious British killer Myra
Hindley. Jim Broadbent appears as the Earl of Longford, who made the unpopular decision to crusade against her execution. |
MISS POTTER (dir: Chris Noonan, PG) – It’s about time they made a
bio-pic of a writer who had absolutely nothing interesting happen to her in her lifetime. Beatrix Potter, it’s your time to shine! |
V.C. ANDREWS’ RAIN (dir: Craig
Dibona, Not Rated) – An orphaned inner-city girl is sent to live with her rich grandmother in order to pursue her musical dreams. About as schlocky and sentimental as you would expect from a grocery store novelist like
V.C. Andrews. |
RENO 911!: MIAMI THE MOVIE (dir: Robert Ben
Garant, Unrated) – The fake cops from Comedy Central get their own movie that sees them head off to a police convention in Florida where they have to deal with exploding whales, a helicopter attack, and many bare breasts. |
ROMEO & JULIET: SEALED WITH A KISS (dir: Phil
Nibbelink, G) – I’m not sure if Shakespeare ever intended Romeo & Juliet to be adapted into a cartoon about the doomed romance of two seals but, hey, what’s he gonna do about it? |
