NEW MOVIES!  JUNE 26 - JULY 2, 2007

BLACK SNAKE MOAN (dir: Craig Brewer, R) – The director of HUSTLE & FLOW returns with another provocative story. Samuel L. Jackson plays a bluesman in the deep south who takes radical measures to get the devil out of Christina Ricci. Like chaining her to his radiator.
^THE BOW (dir: Kim Ki-Duk, Not Rated) – Kim Ki-Duk proves again why he’s one of the world’s most exciting directors with this deceptively simple tale of a young woman’s preparation for an arranged marriage.
CAFÉ SETAREH (dir: Saman Moghadam, Not Rated) – Iran may be a country that oppresses their women, but their cinema continues to provide roles so rich Western actresses must seeth with envy. In this glimpse into modern Tehran, three ladies struggle with deadbeat husbands, career woes and unrequited love.
CLIMATES (dir: Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Not Rated) – Celebrated Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan follows up Cannes winner DISTANT with this poetic ode to lost love shot beautifully along the Aegean coast.
*DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE (dir: Hubert Sauper, Not Rated) – The years most harrowing documentary shows how invasive species combined with greedy Europeans has created a system of economic devastation for the villages on Lake Victoria’s southern shore. Get ready to lose all hope!
DEAD SILENCE (dir: James Wan, Unrated) – Admittedly, the horror genre historically produces a lot more losers than winners. That being said, I still don’t understand how this amateur act killer puppet movie got a theatrical release. Somewhere, Chucky is crying softly to himself.
ISOLATION (dir: Billy O’Brien, R) – Prepare yourself for the inevitable bird flu pandemic that’s going to kill us all with this thriller that sees a killer strain of something yucky work its way through an isolated farming community in a couple of days.
THE LAST CONFEDERATE (dir: A. Blaine Miller / Julian Adams, R) – Am I the only one freaked out by Civil War fanatics? I love bloodbaths as much as the next guy, but what about the zillions of other wars we’ve been involved in? Anyone who wants to start some Grenada invasion reenactments, let me know.
MASAI: THE RAIN WARRIORS (dir: Pascal Plisson, Not Rated) – The Masai are clearly the coolest tribe in Africa. Their look is super-fresh and when the Red God curses them with a drought, they gather their fiercest warriors and go off to kill a legendary lion to appease him and bring back the rains. What have you ever done that’s cooler than that?
PEACEFUL WARRIOR (dir: Victor Salva, PG-13) – Some idiot described this quasi-spiritual story of the struggles of an Olympic hopeful as “ROCKY for the soul.” Infomercial psychopath Tony Robbins says it will “impact the course of your life forever.” All this leads me to believe that there is no way this piece of pseudo-inspirational claptrap will ever contaminate my DVD player. Don’t fall for it, people. It’s all lies.
PRIDE (dir: Sunu Gonera, PG) – Some inner city kids in Philadelphia learn some stuff about life through the magic of swimming… inspirational… true story… blah blah blah… ZZZZZ (Greg snoring sound).
SHOOTER (dir: Antoine Fuqua, R) – Mark Wahlberg, how did you get your hand to be so veiny? I can’t stop staring at it.
SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT (dir: Betsy Blankenbaker, Not Rated) – This award winning documentary shows how in 1955 Oscar Peterson led his segregated high school team to win the Texas state championship and changed basketball, much to the chagrin of short white guys, forever.
A TALE OF TWO PIZZAS (dir: Vincent Sassone, Not Rated) – MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING was five years ago. GET OVER IT.
WEDDING WARS (dir: Jim Fall, Not Rated) – John “Uncle Jessie” Stamos plays a gay party planner who goes on strike to protest for equality. Too bad for his brother, whose impending nuptials are now in jeopardy.
