NEW MOVIES!
JULY 31 - AUGUST 6, 2007
BABYLON 5: THE LOST TALES – VOICES IN THE DARK (dir: J. Michael
Straczynski, Not Rated) – And now, finally, for the 8 of you out there who dearly miss the groundbreaking mid-90s sci-fi series BABYLON 5, here’s a direct-to-DVD movie that reunites a bunch of the cast members for two crucial “10 years later” stories. |
A CRUDE AWAKENING
(dir:Basil Gelpke / Ray McCormack, Not Rated) – Before you go out and buy that Hummer, you should probably check out this documentary that throws out the radical notion that maybe oil will not continue to bubble magically from beneath the sand. Our president accused this film of misleading viewers by using too many “word
thingys.” |
FIREHOUSE DOG (dir: Todd Holland, PG) – A pompous movie star pooch gets kicked out of Hollywood for his
diva-ish behavior and is adopted by a ragtag group of firefighters. Really. |
FIVE DEDICATED TO OZU (dir: Abbas
Kiarostami, Not Rated) – Iran’s most popular (and obtuse) filmmaker, Abbas
Kiarostami, directs this series of silent vignettes as an ode to his hero, Yasujiro
Ozu. |
*HOT FUZZ (dir: Edgar Wright, R) – The creative team behind SHAUN OF THE DEAD skip the sophomore slump and deliver the most fun you’ll have watching a movie so far in 2007. It’s that flippin’ good! |
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ALLEN GINSBERG (dir: Jerry Aronson, Not Rated) – This award-winning documentary spans twenty-five years in the life of one of America’s first beat poets from the post-war 1940s. The film contains never-before-seen footage and interviews by family and artists influenced by Ginsberg. This one’s a must for poets and poetry lovers alike. |
LONELY HEARTS (dir: Todd Robinson, R) – For whatever reason, this crime thriller with John Travolta, James
Gandolfini, Jared Leto and Salma Hayek never made it to theaters. John and James are homicide detectives trying to stop the murderous rampage of Jared and
Salma. |
MR. CONSERVATIVE: GOLDWATER ON GOLDWATER (dir: Julie Anderson, Not Rated) – What a fun little contrarian we have here. When not supporting The Vietnam War and hanging tight with Nixon, Goldwater was also supporting environmental issues, gays in the military and abortion rights. This documentary, made with love by his grandson, illuminates a politician who refused to play politics. |
NOVEL ROMANCE (dir: Emily
Skopov, R) – Traci Lords plays a magazine editor (!!!) who agrees to publish the writings of some dude if he’ll agree to sire her child. |
PATHFINDER (dir: Marcus
Nispel, Unrated) – Don’t wear yourself out getting all lathered up over 300. There’s plenty of greasy abs on display in this Viking epic too! |
^A PIECE OF SKY (dir: Benedicte
Lienard, Not Rated) – This is NORMA RAE but instead of a perky Sally Field you get a bunch of dour French people and a grim town that should have any sensible residents buying the next bus ticket to Belgium. Imagine that, a place more depressing than Belgium. |
PLAYED (dir: Sean
Stanek, R) – Instead of renting this half-baked crime movie with Val Kilmer, I urge you to check out his performance in the remake of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU from ten or so years ago. They should have given him a special Oscar for lunacy. |
REQUIEM FOR BILLY THE KID (dir: Anne
Feinsilber, Not Rated) – Kris Kristofferson narrates this documentary which aims to serve as the definitive portrait of the sassy gunslinger. |
SHADOW PUPPETS (dir: Michael
Winnick, Not Rated) – Some dude from BUFFY stars in this grimy little horror film set in a disused mental asylum. |
THE SITUATION (dir: Philip Haas, R) – Connie Nielson stars in this political thriller set against the backdrop of Iraq. She plays a journalist out to uncover the truth behind a small boy’s death at the hands of American troops. And Fox News (!) called it “Brave and honest…too important and too good to miss.” |
STARTER FOR 10 (dir: Tom Vaughan, PG-13) – James McAvoy from THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND stars as a university student desperate to get on a quiz show, as well as winning over the cutest girl on campus. |
STEAL ME (dir: Melissa Painter, Not Rated) – Three curious teenagers in Montana explore their burgeoning interest in the pleasures of the flesh. Starting with watching 300. |
300 (dir: Zach Snyder, R) – Finally, the movie that caused millions of teenage boys to have a strange tingling sensation in their lower bellies hits home video. And not a moment too soon. Fans of this muscle-bound epic have been ready to burst waiting for it. |
A WORLD WITHOUT THIEVES (dir: Feng
Xiaogang, Not Rated) – Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau stars as a master pickpocket ready to retire…until he hooks up with a sexy grifter who may be taking him for a ride. |
YELLOW (dir: Alfredo De Villa, R) – Roselyn Sanchez from BOAT TRIP plays a Puerto Rican ballerina who dreams of dancing in New York. And she does. At a really sleazy strip club. |
