NEW MOVIES!
SEPTEMBER 18 - SEPTEMBER 24, 2007
ANTIBODIES (dir: Christian
Alvart, Not Rated) – Who wouldn’t want to watch a German horror movie with a naked guy smeared with blood on the cover? |
BEYOND THE GATES (dir: Michael
Caton-Jones, Not Rated) – If you’re like me, you can’t get enough of African genocide movies. Until they start making them about Darfur, enjoy another critically acclaimed look at Rwanda. |
BLOODRAYNE 2: DELIVERANCE (dir: Uwe Boll, Not Rated) – More vampire cowboys get slaughtered by a sexy heroine in an outfit that seems really inconvenient for such activities. |
THE BOSS OF IT ALL (dir: Lars von Trier, Not Rated) – Cinematic terrorist Lars von Trier turns in what is perhaps his most palatable film ever. In it, the owner of a small company, to avoid the responsibility, hires an actor to play domineering boss to his unruly employees with, obviously, comic results. |
BROOKLYN RULES (dir: Michael
Corrente, R) – I don’t really give a toss about this sub-Sopranos crime drama, but seeing Alec Baldwin gazing back from the cover of anything is always comforting. Dude is a genius. Have you seen him on 30 ROCK? And if you haven’t, why not? It’s brilliant. I don’t even care about that thing where he called his daughter a piglet or whatever. She probably deserved it. |
THE CAMDEN 28 (dir: Anthony
Giacchino, Not Rated) – This stirring documentary about Vietnam protestors who broke into government offices to destroy draft records got me all psyched about civil disobedience until I realized that everything is just totally futile and the masters of war will always get their way. So this supposedly stirring documentary actually just ended up making me more depressed than ever. Does anyone have a Quaalude? |
THE CONDEMNED (dir: Scott Wiper, R) – If you’re not Rowdy “Roddy” Piper in THEY LIVE or Andre The Giant in THE PRINCESS BRIDE then you have no business being a professional wrestler and starring in a movie. Do you understand me Stone Cold Steve Austin? |
DEATH PROOF (dir: Quentin Tarantino, Not Rated) – I’m still mad at America for failing to get excited about
GRINDHOUSE. It was honestly one of the most fun nights at the movies in years. At least now you can check out an extended cut of Quentin Tarantino’s contribution. |
DREAMING LHASA (dir: Ritu Sarin / Tenzing
Sonam, Not Rated) – A Tibetan filmmaker travels to the Dalai Lama’s crib in northern India to interview political prisoners but quickly gets caught up in an ex-monk’s search for his mother. |
THE FLYING SCOTSMAN (dir: Douglas Mackinnon, PG-13) – Bi-polar disorder couldn’t stop Graeme
Obree, played memorably by Jonny Lee Miller, from becoming a world champion cyclist. But a controversial ban of his unique riding style could. |
GRACIE (dir: Davis Guggenheim, PG-13) – Finally Andrew and Elizabeth
Shue, those soccer-crazy siblings, get to make a film together. This account of a girl’s desire to play on the boys’ varsity high school team is based on Elizabeth’s experiences growing up and Andrew, who was a professional player in Africa before walking around with no shirt on throughout the entire run of MELROSE PLACE, helped her produce and write the screenplay. |
GRAVEYARD OF HONOR (dir: Takashi
Miike, Not Rated) – Insane Japanese auteur remakes the classic tale of Yakuza vengeance, assumedly because its previous incarnation wasn’t brutally violent enough. |
L’ICEBERG (dir: Dominique Abel / Fiona Gordon / Bruno
Romy, Not Rated) – In this whimsical Belgian comedy, a seemingly happy wife and mother splits town to go live on an iceberg. |
^LOL (dir: Joe
Swanberg, Not Rated) – If you haven’t yet succumbed to the latest craze in American indie filmmaking,
mumblecore, here’s another chance to check it out. It’s the story of a couple of young aimless slackers trying to process the impact technology is having on their aimless lives. |
LUCKY YOU (dir: Curtis Hanson, PG-13) – It took approximately a zillion years for Warner Brothers to release this gambling drama with Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore. Because it sucks. |
PUNISH ME (dir: Angelina
Maccarone, Not Rated) – For fans of moody German movies about shirtless models only. |
*SEVERANCE (dir: Christopher Smith, R) – Fans of SHAUN OF THE DEAD will love this great horror-comedy about employees of a company on a team-building retreat that goes seriously wrong. |
SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY (dir: Bruce Timm / Lauren Montgomery / Brandon
Vietti, PG-13) – To hold you over until Kevin Spacey gets back to chewing scenery as Lex Luthor and that really boring kid makes us fall asleep as the man of steel. |
TRIAD ELECTION (dir: Johnnie To, Not Rated) – THE GODFATHER. In Hong Kong! |
TWO WEEKS (dir: Steve Stockman, R) – How this Sally Field drama escaped the Lifetime network we’ll never know. |
WE ARE MARSHALL (dir:
McG, PG) – Entire football team dies in plane crash. Sad. Football team comes back and triumphs thanks to inspiring coaching by Matthew
McConaughey. Yay! |
ZOO (dir: Robinson
Devor, Unrated) – The less I say about this documentary about a man and his beloved horse the better. Trust me. |
