NEW MOVIES!
OCTOBER 9 - OCTOBER 15, 2007
ALLEGRO (dir: Christoffer
Boe, Not Rated) – Danish supermodel Helena Christensen gives acting a try in this cerebral thriller from her homeland. |
AUTUMN (dir: Ra’Up McGee, Not Rated) – I was just wondering what happened to Irene Jacob from THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE and RED. She appears alongside Laurent Lucas in this French noir about a hitman trying to go straight. |
BLACK SHEEP (dir: Jonathan King, Not Rated) – In the spirit of early Peter Jackson films like BAD TASTE and DEAD-ALIVE comes BLACK SHEEP, a gross and hilarious horror film from New Zealand about the dangers of genetically altering farm animals. Especially when they outnumber humans in your country 20 to 1. |
EVAN ALMIGHTY (dir: Tom
Shadyac, PG) – In case you ever wanted to see what the director of PATCH ADAMS would do if Universal Studios gave him $200,000,000 to waste on a biblical comedy. |
FRIENDS OF GOD (dir: Alexandra Pelosi, Not Rated) – Less frightening than JESUS CAMP but still rocking that same creepy/hilarious vibe is FRIENDS WITH GOD, documentarian Alexandra Pelosi’s road trip through evangelical America. |
HOMIE SPUMONI (dir: Mike
Cerrone, R) – A black kid is raised by Italians in Little Italy, but imagine the culture clash when his birth parents show up! |
MAN PUSH CART (dir: Ramin
Bahrani, Not Rated) – This stark indie follows a Pakistani immigrant through his daily routine of selling coffee and donuts on the streets of New York, a city in which he lives but is not his home. |
PAPER CUT (dir: Archie Borders, R) – A group of young friends start an alternative newspaper dedicated to sex, drugs and rock and roll but soon find themselves becoming the story. |
RED WITHOUT BLUE (dir: Brooke Sebold / Benita Sills / Todd Sills, Not Rated) – This emotionally wrenching documentary follows a pair of identical twins as one undergoes gender reassignment surgery and shows the devastating effect it has on their family. |
THE REEF (dir: Kyung Ho Lee / John Fox / Howard Baker, G) – I guess somebody was missing the days of cheap-o cartoons with vocal appearances by grade-z stars like Rob Schneider. Was Sinbad busy or something? |
REIGN OVER ME (dir: Mike Binder, R) – Adam Sandler goes the serious route as a widower who lost his wife and children on 9/11. Don Cheadle plays his college roommate who tries to get him to learn to live again. |
RISE: BLOOD HUNTER (dir: Sebastian Gutierrez, Unrated) – Lucy Lui is bummed when she wakes up in the morgue as a vampire. So naturally she then acquires a crossbow and, while desperately fighting off her own thirst for blood, sets about destroying creatures of the night. Probably based on a comic book or video game. |
SHANGHAI KISS (dir: David Ren / Kern
Konwiser, Not Rated) – The Cheerleader from HEROES heads off to China in this inspiring coming-of-age story. |
SURF’S UP (dir: Ash Brannon / Chris Buck, PG) – Is anyone else sick of animated penguins? Or, for that matter, penguins in general? |
THREE DAYS OF RAIN (dir: Michael Meredith, R) – Legendary director Wim Wenders lends his name to “present” this ensemble drama set in Cleveland which stars Peter Falk, Blythe Danner and Lyle Lovett. |
THE TREATMENT (dir: Oren
Rudavsky, Not Rated) – Chris Eigeman from the Whit Stillman films plays an emotionally paralyzed young teacher who, with the help of a comically radical therapist and the love of Famke Janssen, makes huge leaps forward. |
^12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST (dir: Corneliu
Porumboiu, Not Rated) – Three longtime acquaintances gather to discuss the anniversary of Nicolae Ceausescu’s downfall on a talk show, but old grudges quickly become the topic of discussion in this Romanian comedy. |
*28 WEEKS LATER (dir: Juan Carlos
Fresnadillo, R) – Even fans of Danny Boyle’s 28 DAYS LATER, myself included, had to admit that this is a rare sequel that outdoes the original. The zombies are nastier, the tension more palpable and the political satire more severe. Viva blood-spewing zombies! |
WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END (dir: Joe Lynch, Not Rated) – A survival-themed reality show turns deadly when a mutant family of cannibals show up in this direct-to-video sequel. And Henry Rollins is in it! |
YOU KILL ME (dir: John Dahl, R) – Ben Kingsley takes a break from appearing in non-gems like BLOODRAYNE and A SOUND OF THUNDER to appear in an actual good movie from RED ROCK WEST director John Dahl. He plays an alcoholic hit man for the Polish mob in Buffalo who’s just trying to roll with the punches. |
