NEW MOVIES!
OCTOBER 30 - NOVEMBER 4, 2007
APARTMENT 1303 (dir: Ataru Oikawa, Not Rated) – You know the drill. A pretty young Japanese woman is menaced by dark forces after moving into an apartment that has some issues. |
CAPTIVITY (dir: Roland
Joffe, Unrated) – Elisha Cuthbert finds herself in a load of trouble when a mouth-breathing psycho decides she’d make a good inhabitant of the cage in his basement. |
DAY WATCH (dir: Timur
Bekmambetov, Unrated) – This disappointing middle film in the Russian vampire trilogy tries to bombard you into submission with over-the-top violence and snazzy special effects. Hopefully, the final film will have a little more meat on its bones. |
EL CANTANTE (dir: Leon
Ichaso, R) – As far as overblown and mercilessly corny bio-pics about dead Puerto Rican singers I’ve never heard of go, this was pretty good. |
IN THE LAND OF WOMEN (dir: Jonathan
Kasdan, PG-13) – Meg Ryan comes out of semi-retirement to sharpen her cougar claws on Adam Brody, that really attractive nerd from THE
O.C. |
JACKIE CHAN’S THE MYTH (dir: Stanley Tong, PG-13) – Jackie Chan has to travel back in time to find people he hasn’t kicked already. |
JOURNEY FROM THE FALL (dir: Ham Tran, R) – This ambitious undertaking from Vietnam tells the story of the arduous journey a family makes at sea after the fall of Saigon. |
LICENSE TO WED (dir: Ken
Kwapis, PG-13) – If you thought RV was as low as Robin Williams could sink, check out this atrocity which is, for now, the worst reviewed film of 2007. |
*NO END IN SIGHT (dir: Charles Ferguson, Not Rated) – Out of all the documentaries that have emerged concerning the Iraq war, this is the one that seems most likely to be its definitive portrait. |
PIERREPOINT:
THE LAST HANGMAN (dir: Adrian Shergold, R) – Reliable Timothy Spall plays Britain’s famed executioner, who personally put the noose around 608 people’s heads. |
SPIDER-MAN 3 (dir: Sam
Raimi, PG-13) – Also known as SPIDER-MAN: I CRY A LOT. |
^TALK TO ME (dir: Kasi
Lemmons, R) – Don Cheadle turns in another winning performance as Petey Greene, the legendary Washington D.C. disc jockey who caused a big stir with his controversial broadcasts in the Seventies. |
THE
WENDELL BAKER STORY (dir: Andrew Wilson /
Luke Wilson) - No amount of good will one has toward the Wilson
brothers (and we've got a lot) can keep this Seventies-style con-man
caper flick from feeling like anything more than a really lazy Wes Anderson movie. |
