NEW MOVIES!  DECEMBER 4 - DECEMBER 10, 2007

AMNESIA: THE JAMES BRIGHTON ENIGMA (dir: Denis Langlois, Not Rated) – A young American man is found naked and beaten in a Montreal parking lot and after spending a month in a psychiatric hospital still can’t remember who he is. Perhaps a spunky criminologist-in-training can solve the mystery.
ANTONIA (dir: Tata Amaral, PG-13) – Four Sao Paulo girlfriends fed up with the abject poverty and casual sexism in their lives form a rap group. Can they silence the violence or will they succumb to harsh fates?
ARCTIC TALE (dir: Adam Ravetch / Sarah Robertson, G) – It’s just MARCH OF THE PENGUINS with polar bears and Queen Latifah narrating. That’s not a criticism. Polar bears are awesome. Except that polar bear statue at Bowdoin. What’s up with its neck? Who let that happen?
CUT SLEEVE BOYS (dir: Ray Yeung, R) – After the death of their friend, two British Chinese gay guys contemplate where their hard-partying ways are leading them.
DEAR PILLOW (dir: Bryan Poyser, Not Rated) – A teenage boy finds an unlikely role model in a middle aged neighbor who writes for adult magazines.
THE GIRL NEXT DOOR (dir: Gregory M. Wilson, Not Rated) – Stephen King loved this shocking tale of suburban mayhem set in the 1950s, calling it the most shocking American movie in 20 years.
GLUE (dir: Alexis Dos Santos, Not Rated) – What are three bored teenagers in rural Patagonia to do to pass the time? Huff inhalants and engage in awkward grope sessions, of course!
HORRORS OF WAR (dir: John Whitney / Peter John Ross, Not Rated) – WWII was obviously a blast, but how next-level would it have been if the Nazis were zombies?
THE HOTTEST STATE (dir: Ethan Hawke, R) – Not satisfied with trying to be the Marlon Brando of his generation, Ethan Hawke sets out to be its Ernest Hemingway as well, penning the novel that he has now adapted into a film starring himself. At this too, he fails miserably.
^INNOCENCE (dir: Lucile Hadzihalilovic, R) – If you felt that PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK was a fascinating portrait of young girls at private school but could have used a pervier touch, here’s INNOCENCE, a movie about which The New York Times said, “The line between cinematic art and exploitation has rarely seemed finer.”
LIGHTS IN THE DUSK (dir: Aki Kaurismaki, Unrated) – Aki Kaurismaki, Finland’s most important director (if one disregards Renny Harlin) concludes his loose trilogy of DRIFTING CLOUDS and THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST with this Cannes favorite about a night watchman lured into criminal endeavors by a brassy blonde.
THE NANNY DIARIES (dir: Robert Pulcini / Shari Springer Berman, PG-13) – The filmmakers behind the criminally underappreciated AMERICAN SPLENDOR sell their souls to the Hollywood devil and direct this dreary adaptation of the dreary chick lit expose of Upper East Side snobbery.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END (dir: Gore Verbinski, PG-13) – Has your goofy swashbuckling trilogy become too confusing when you have to include a FAQ card with the DVD to explain what happened in the film? And I’m serious. This comes with one.
ROCK HAVEN (dir: David Lewis, Not Rated) – An 18-year-old devout Christian moves to a small Northern California town and is soon forced to determine whether he would prefer to follow the doctrines of his faith or to romance his male neighbor.
*SUPERBAD (dir: Greg Mottola, Unrated) – Following THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, THE WEDDING CRASHERS and KNOCKED UP, Hollywood continues to cater to overgrown adolescents with this epochal teen romp from Judd Apatow and Seth Rogan. And I, for one, would just like to tell Hollywood, “Thanks.”
* = Greg's pick of the week!         ^ = Bart's pick of the week!
