NEW MOVIES!  DECEMBER 18 - DECEMBER 24, 2007

BALLS OF FURY (dir: Robert Ben Garant, PG-13) – Christopher Walken somehow manages to emerge unscathed from this wacky table tennis comedy from the makers of RENO 911!.
BRING IT ON: IN IT TO WIN IT (dir: Steve Rash, PG-13) – I’m not quite sure how BRING IT ON has now spawned a third straight-to-video sequel. I blame the tweens.
THE CROOKED E: THE UNSHREDDED TRUTH ABOUT ENRON (dir: Penelope Spheeris, Not Rated) – Penelope Spheeris directs this insiders’ look at the biggest financial scandal of the decade, although I’m pretty sure ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM will stand as the defining portrait of those scummers.
DEEP WATER (dir: Louise Osmond / Jerry Rothwell, PG) – This exciting nautical documentary tells the story of Donald Crowhurst, who in 1967 was the least experienced of 9 solo racers sailing around the world. New York Magazine assures us it’s “GRIZZLY MAN meets THE PERFECT STORM.” I assume the GRIZZLY MAN reference is about the crazy aspect, not that there was a stowaway bear. If there is a stowaway bear, then this is now my favorite movie ever made.
DRAMA/MEX (dir: Gerardo Naranjo, Not Rated) – Mexican hotties Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal produced this edgy drama about aimless young people in Acapulco.
HALLOWEEN (dir: Rob Zombie, Unrated) – John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN remains the CITIZEN KANE of horror films, but it’s been hard to watch its reputation get sullied by years of half-hearted sequels. Rob Zombie at least attempts a grand “reimagining” of the first film which is half prequel, half remake. Still, the original is untouchable.
HATCHET (dir: Adam Green, Unrated) – Unless you’re SCREAM or CABIN FEVER, mixing horror and comedy is a tough path to choose - as evidenced by the alternately unfunny and not scary HATCHET.
ILLEGAL TENDER (dir: Franc. Reyes, R) – A college student whose Dad was killed by gangsters goes looking for revenge, and brings along his heat-packing Mom.
THE LAST LEGION (dir: Doug Lefler, PG-13) – Not since Orson Welles has such an esteemed actor been so flagrant about whoring himself out for any piece of junk that provides a paycheck substantial enough. Sir Ben Kingsley, I’m referring to you.
^LIVE-IN MAID (dir: Jorge Gaggero, Not Rated) – A middle-aged Argentinean woman finds herself in a precarious financial situation and must dismiss her maid of thirty years. When both women realize how daunting the prospect of being suddenly alone is, they try to find a suitable new arrangement.
*ONCE (dir: John Carney, R) – It’s so exciting when audiences latch onto a tiny and deserving film. And that’s exactly what happened last summer when this romantic musical from Ireland won hearts with its heartfelt emotions and touching songs.
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (dir: David Silverman, PG-13) – I’m glad they finally made it, but after 17 years I feel pretty let down by this milestone. About half as funny as it could have been.
STARDUST (dir: Matthew Vaughn, PG-13) – It’s been a long time since they’ve made a whimsical PRINCESS BRIDE-ish fairy tale movie, and my colleagues assure me this will make you smile all winter long.
UNDERDOG (dir: Frederik Du Chau, PG) – Jason Lee lends his vocal stylings to this live-action Disney update of the classic cartoon that kids of today have never heard of.
* = Greg's pick of the week!         ^ = Bart's pick of the week!
