NEW
MOVIES! MARCH 4 - MARCH 10, 2008
AUTOMATONS (dir: James Felix
McKenney, Not Rated) – If you’re concerned that the war between humans and robots has taken a bad turn, you’re correct. As this
lo-fi science fiction film shot with tinker toys will attest. |
AWAKE (dir: Joby Harold, R) – Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba team up for this medical thriller which hopefully doesn’t require either of them to act. |
HOGFATHER (dir: Vadim Jean, Not Rated) – This fantasy mini-series
made for the BBC is based on Terry Prachett’s Discworld novels and was showered with awards. So just ignore the box art that was made in Microsoft paint. |
*INTO THE WILD (dir: Sean Penn, R) – Sean Penn turns in a terrific adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book about Chris
McCandless, the young upper middle class kid who rejected the suburbs, burned his money and set out to live in the Alaskan wilderness. |
LOS MUERTOS (dir: Lisandro
Alonso, Not Rated) – A middle-aged man is released from prison in Argentina and sets out on a long journey to find his now adult daughter in this meditative drama. |
MY KID COULD PAINT THAT (dir: Amir Bar-Lev, PG-13) – This entertaining doc looks into the strange case of 4-year-old Marla Olmstead, whose paintings have fetched six figure prices in the art world. But is it all a hoax? Maybe it’s just a metaphor that all painters are 4-year-olds. |
9 STAR HOTEL (dir: Ido
Haar, Not Rated) – This hard-hitting documentary follows Palestinean workers who sneak into Israel every day to do low wage jobs but then must sneak back before the daily police sweeps. |
^RADIANT CITY (dir: Gary Burns / Jim Brown, Not Rated) – The director of WAYDOWNTOWN and KITCHEN PARTY returns with this scathingly comic take on suburban sprawl, Canadian-style. |
THE RAGE (dir: Robert
Kurtzman, Unrated) – A scientist
experiments with a “rage” virus on unwitting victims in an isolated cabin. What could possibly go wrong? |
TERROR'S ADVOCATE (dir: Barbet Schroeder, Not Rated) – Next time you commit some war crimes or violate human rights on a large scale, don’t worry. This guy, Jacques Verges, will come to your defense. |
THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE (dir: Susanne Bier, R) – Danish director Susanne Bier follows up AFTER THE WEDDING with her first English language feature. Unfortunately, it’s a soggy drug drama that wastes the talents of Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro. |
THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING (dir: Marwan
Hamed, Not Rated) – This sprawling Egyptian movie follows the varied denizens of an apartment building in Cairo as their stories weave together over the course of its nearly three hour running time. |
