NEW
MOVIES! APRIL 22 - APRIL 28, 2008
*CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR (dir: Mike Nichols, R) – America’s faves Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts finally share the big screen in Mike Nichol’s witty and dramatic tale of political repercussions set against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It’s Philip Seymour Hoffman who steals the show, though. As usual. |
CLOVERFIELD (dir: Matt Reeves, PG-13) – Do you enjoy being seasick? If you answered yes, maybe you’ll enjoy this gimmicky sci-fi washout that uses brain-jiggling handheld camerawork to obnoxious effect. |
CRUEL WORLD (dir: Kelsey T. Howard, R) – Edward Furlong goes nuts as a reality show contestant who, after being humiliated on national television, takes some hostages and lets the whole thing play out on live
TV. Is this movie just sleazy exploitation or a big fat metaphor for our fast-food culture? |
EXCELLENT CADAVERS (dir: Marco
Turco, Not Rated) – If the cover is any indication, I think it’s safe to say this documentary about the origins of the Sicilian mafia is going to be really intense. |
THE 4TH DIMENSION (dir: Tom Mattera / David
Mazzoni, Not Rated) – This moody mind-bender has been compared to the work of Franz Kafka, David Lynch and Roman
Polanski. And you know the film school nerds who directed it are true auteurs because it’s in black and white. |
^HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS (dir: Joe
Swanberg, Not Rated) – If you’re a fan of the underground style of filmmaking known as “mumblecore,” you can’t miss this smash mumblecore hit that teams up some of
the genre’s biggest names like Mark Duplass and Andrew Bujalski. |
LOVE COM (dir: Kitaji Ishikawa, Not Rated) – This Japanese comedy is based on a famous comic about an awkward teenage boy and girl who, against all odds, make a love connection. Did I mention that he’s the shortest boy in school and she’s the tallest girl? |
MY BOY JACK (dir: Brian Kirk, Not Rated) – Oh, look. Hawwy Pawter gwew
hisself a widdle mustache. Awww. |
NANA (dir: Kentaro
Otani, Not Rated) – Again with the Japanese comics being turned into movies. This one is about two young ladies both named Nana whose paths cross in unexpected ways, And yes, that is Japanese pop superstar Mika Nakashima. |
NINA'S HEAVENLY DELIGHTS (dir: Pratibha
Parmar, PG-13) – A young woman takes over her deceased father’s curry house in Glasgow but what’s really simmering is her secret desire for, get this, another lady! |
ONE MISSED CALL (dir: Eric
Valette, PG-13) – Shannyn Sossamon hasn’t done much between THE RULES OF ATTRACTION and this retread of a Japanese horror movie about killer cell-phones but she did take time out to have a baby and name it Audio Science a few years back. |
THE ORPHANAGE (dir: Juan Antonio
Bayona, R) – A woman returns to her childhood home to live with her family in this highly regarded thriller from Spain. Too bad her childhood home is haunted by ghost children. |
ROMULUS, MY FATHER (dir: Richard
Roxburgh, R) – Actor Richard Roxburgh took time out from appearing in
gems like STEALTH and VAN HELSING to make his directorial debut with this family drama set in rugged Australia. Eric Bana and Franka Potente star. |
THE SAVAGES (dir: Tamara Jenkins, R) – Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman star as siblings who get stuck taking care of their ailing father in this most-uncomfortable of comedies. |
SICK NURSES (dir: Piraphan Laoyont / Thodsapol
Siriwiwat, Not Rated) – In this slick Thai horror flick several really foxy nurses start a scam involving body parts and the black market. The ghosts in their hospital probably will not approve. |
STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING (dir: Andrew Wagner, PG-13) – Frank Langella stars as a forgotten writer who mentors a young student played by Lauren Ambrose. Oh, and to make things interesting has an affair with her. |
THIEVES AND LIARS (dir: Ricardo Mendez
Matta, R) – Steven Bauer stars as a Puerto Rican man struggling to keep his family out of the drug trade that has infiltrated every level of life on La Isla Bonita. |
TICK TOCK LULLABY (dir: Lisa
Gornick, Not Rated) – A nice lesbian couple in London have a heckuva time finding a good sperm donor for their baby. |
THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER (dir: Michael
Verhoeven, Not Rated) – Michael Verhoeven’s documentary about what average German soldiers were really up to during WWII made a big impact in Deutschland where everybody likes to think their grandpas were helpless pawns in Hitler’s vice-like grip. |
