ASIAN
STORIES (dir: Ron Oda, Not Rated) A jilted man convinces his
friend to put him out of his misery before Valentine's Day. Since
this is a comedy, I imagine at least one of them has second
thoughts. |
BEFORE I FORGET (dir: Jacques
Nolot, Unrated) An aging gigolo in Paris tries to stay off the streets after his wealthy benefactor dies in this award-winning French film. |
BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER* (dir: Chris Bell, PG-13) This documentary weighing the positives and negatives of criminal steroid use is fun for a while, when it's spilling the beans on Arnold
Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Mark McGwire and nearly every other famous person with muscles, but gets bogged down when the filmmaker wades into the boring territory of his troubled juicer brothers. |
CHAPTER
27 (dir: J.P. Schaefer, R) Kurt says, "When I found out
Jared Leto was a part of the smash-hit group 30 Seconds to Mars I
didn't care. But when I found out he microwaved gallons of
Hδagen-Dazs and drank them daily, I became interested. If you ever
thought you couldn't laugh one second and instantly feel oogy the
next, then this movie about the assassination of John Lennon will
show you otherwise." |
DAFT PUNK'S ELECTROMA (dir: Thomas Bangalter / Guy-Manuel De
Homem-Christo, Not Rated) Expect the unexpected in this debut feature film from France's favorite electro-producing robots. |
THE DEVIL'S MUSE (dir: Ramzi Abed, Not Rated) Strange things are happening to young Hollywood actresses on the eve of the 60th anniversary of The Black Dahlia murder. |
FORGETTING
SARAH MARSHALL (dir: Nicholas Stoller, Unrated) The latest
Judd Apatow-related film is a bit of a letdown after THE 40-YEAR-OLD
VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP but is not without its small pleasures -
mainly British stand-up comedian Russell Brand as a narcissistic
musician. |
^IRON MAN (dir: Jon
Favreau, PG-13) Kurt says,
"Is this another one of those liberal propaganda movies that force
feed me anti-war messages topped with American pride? NO WAY! This movie is straight up awesome! Who cares about war propaganda when it looks this fun and exciting!?
Plus, this movie has a true-to-life moral sentimentality that most average
Americans can relate to. The true moral of this movie is: if you work really hard then maybe your daddy will hand you down his billion dollar weapons company to have at your disposal. And
then you can do what most of us would do: take revenge on all your enemies...
with superior fire-power! |
JELLYFISH (dir: Shira Geffen / Etgar
Keret, Not Rated) Three women in Israel stumble across one another in unexpected ways in this comedic slice of life that was a film festival favorite. |
KENNY
(dir: Clayton Jacobson, PG-13) This Australian mockumentary
follows a porta-loo vendor around and is by all accounts very funny. |
PULSE 2:
AFTERLIFE (dir: Joel Soisson, R) Just in time for the Asian horror phenomenon that ended 5 years ago comes this straight-to-DVD sequel. Better late than never, boys! |
THE RAPE OF EUROPA (dir: Richard Berge / Bonni Cohen, Not Rated) Among other things, the Nazis are responsible for is the hijacking of many of Europe's greatest works of art. Find out where they ended
up - for example, in Liz Taylor's house. |
THE REBEL (dir: Truc 'Charlie' Nguyen, R) This butt-kicking action movie is about Vietnamese dudes fighting the French colonists in the
1920s. It's like INDOCHINE with way more dudes getting kicked in the head. |
*TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE (dir: Alex
Gibney, R) Being a taxi driver in Afghanistan is rough. Sometimes somebody leaves you a bad tip and sometimes the CIA kidnaps you and tortures you to death. This was this year's winner for documentaries at The Oscars. |
THE UNFORESEEN (dir: Laura Dunn, Not Rated) This documentary about the politics of environmental issues in Texas features input from Robert Redford, among others. |
UNSTABLE FABLES: TORTOISE VS. HARE (dir: Howard E. Baker / Arish
Fyzee, G) Jim Henson has been dead since about 1991 and yet he's still kicking out solid kids' entertainment. It really makes you think about all the stuff you can accomplish in the afterlife. |
