NEW MOVIES!  MARCH 3 - MARCH 9, 2009

^ASHES OF TIME REDUX (dir: Kar Wai Wong, R) – Nearly every Hong Kong star that mattered in 1994 stars in this re-edit of Wong's  action-filled meditation on the nature of love and memory which centers around a middleman who connects swordsmen with individuals who need people killed.

AUSTRALIA (dir: Baz Luhrmann, PG-13) – Don't let the fact that this Baz Luhrmann epic flopped at the box office stop you from enjoying its melodramatic cheesecake. It's worth it for the scenery alone.

BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA (dir: Raja Gosnell, PG) - Only the director responsible for HOME ALONE 3, SCOOBY DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASHED and BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE could possibly pull off a talking chihuahua movie. And he does!
DEAD IN 3 DAYS (dir: Andreas Prochaska / Stewart St. John, R) – A bunch of German teenagers with really beautiful bone structure receive text messages telling them they're going to die. Do not confuse this with THE RING, ONE MISSED CALL or PULSE. It's really different.

DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME (dir: Shusuke Kaneko, Not Rated) – Trying to describe what this is about made my head hurt so I will just say that it's based on a popular anime and involves attractive Asian teenagers moving between the realms of life and death.

IN THE ELECTRIC MIST (dir: Bertrand Tavernier, R) – Why Tommy Lee Jones agreed to appear in a goofy Cajun thriller in which he repeatedly hangs out with the ghosts of Civil War soldiers is anyone's guess. But it was probably the chance to work with legendary French director Bertrand Tavernier, making only his second English language film.
I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG (dir: Philippe Claudel, PG-13) – Kristen Scott Thomas is terrific as a woman reconciling with her family after fifteen years in prison. And she gets to speak French for the entire film.

*LAKE CITY (dir: Hunter Hill / Perry Moore, R) – Sissy Spacek turns in a great performance, as usual, in this wrongly overlooked indie about a Southern family with a very troubled past.

OTTO; OR, UP WITH DEAD PEOPLE (dir: Bruce La Bruce, Unrated) – If there had to be a gay zombie movie, at least it's indie maverick Bruce LaBruce making it.
REAL TIME (dir: Randall Cole, R) – That kid from KNOCKED UP and TROPIC THUNDER teams up with Randy Quaid for this dark comedy about a compulsive gambler and the hitman assigned to kill him.

STRICTLY SEXUAL (dir: Joel Viertel, R) - A couple of successful women who are fed up with dating let a couple of young studs live in their pool house in exchange for the satisfaction of all of their carnal needs.

THE VILLAGE BARBERSHOP (dir: Chris J. Ford, Not Rated) - John Ratzenberger from CHEERS plays a grumpy barber who, against his wishes, is forced to hire a woman. Is it possible that she could be the one person who could melt his frosty heart?
WEAPONS (dir: Adam Bhala Lough, Unrated) – Paul Dano, Nick Cannon and Mark Weber star in this gritty indie about a group of deadbeat kids rushing toward a violent date with destiny.

WONDER WOMAN (dir: Lauren Montgomery, PG-13) – Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Alfred Molina and Rosario Dawson all lend their voices to this animated revamp of the classic D.C. comic.
