NEW MOVIES!  MAY 5 - MAY 11, 2009

CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (dir: Nikhil Advani, PG-13) – An Indian cook is tricked into believing he’s the reincarnation of a Chinese war hero and is sent off to battle a deadly female assassin in this huge Bollywood hit.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (dir: David Fincher, PG-13) – Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett re-team for David Fincher’s visionary epic about a dude who is born old and grows younger. Criterion liked it enough to make it the first new movie they’ve released since THE LIFE AQUATIC.

ECOUTE LE TEMPS (FISSURES) (dir: Alante Kavaite, Not Rated) – A young woman travels to the country home where her mother was murdered and is frustrated to discover the police have made no progress. She starts investigating on her own and makes some shocking supernatural discoveries.
HOUSE OF THE SLEEPING BEAUTIES (dir: Vadim Glowna, Not Rated) – In this German perv-fest disguised as an art-house release, a lonely widower finds out about a secret place where you can spend the night with many beautiful ladies… who are all asleep and cannot wake up. As if there was any doubt, this is a remake of a Japanese film.

HOW ABOUT YOU (dir: Anthony Byrne, Not Rated) – In this adorable Irish film, a girl with a huge mouth takes a job at a residential home for grey-tops and melts their grumpiness with her youthful vigor.

HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN (dir: Silvio Pollio, Not Rated) – A young man returns to his roots selling drugs in order to finance the feature film he’s directing. It worked for Hitchcock and it can work for him too.
INCENDIARY (dir: Sharon Maguire, R) – Michelle Williams gives a terrific performance as a woman who loses her husband and son in a London terrorist attack. Luckily for her, she was off having an intimate tryst with her secret lover Ewan McGregor at the time. Although that may lead to a slightly guilty conscience.

A JIHAD FOR LOVE (dir: Parvez Sharma, Not Rated) – The makers of TREMBLING BEFORE G-D continue their globe-trotting search for the planet's most unlikely homosexuals with this documentary that spans continents to find out what being gay and Muslim really means.

^JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY (dir: Ole Bornedal, Not Rated) – If you remade WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING as an ultra-violent Danish gangster movie it might look a lot like this.
LAST CHANCE HARVEY (dir: Joel Hopkins, PG-13) – The critics loved this whimsical romance with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. But it’s a real snooze-fest so I don’t know what their deal is. Skip it unless you’re looking to catch a few zzzzz’s.

LIVING PROOF (dir: Dan Ireland, Not Rated) – Harry Connick Jr. stars in this true story about a doctor who found the cure for cancer or something. Oh, wait. Cancer hasn’t been cured yet. So why does this jerk get a movie?

LOOK (dir: Adam Rifkin, R) – This creepy curiosity tells its story of urban alienation completely through the use of surveillance camera footage. While this may seem like a gimmick, audiences and critics at Film Festivals were blown away.
A PLUMM SUMMER (dir: Caroline Zelder, PG) – In this strange family comedy, Henry Winkler and William Baldwin must save a kidnapped TV puppet in order to restore the hopes and dreams of a small Montana town.

SMOTHER (dir: Vince Di Meglio, PG-13) – Has it really come to this for Diane Keaton? A straight-to-DVD remake of MONSTER-IN-LAW? Nice Mike White cameo though.

THE WEDDING WEEKEND (dir: Bruce Leddy, R) – A group of college friends reunite for a friend’s wedding in The Hamptons and you can expect one thing. Shenanigans. Absolute shenanigans.
*WENDY AND LUCY (dir: Kelly Reichardt, R) – Michelle Williams takes another step toward being our favorite actress with this low-key indie from the director of our beloved OLD JOY. She plays Wendy, a young lady traveling to Alaska who gets unexpectedly held up in a small Oregon town with her dog Lucy.

WORKING CLASS ROCK STAR (dir: Justin McConnell, Not Rated) – If you think being a rock star is all about snorting coke off Gwen Stefani’s abdominals on a pool table at George Michael’s house, you’re absolutely correct. But what about all the bands on the way up, trekking from show to show in a greasy van? This documentary aims to tell their stories as well.
