NEW
MOVIES! MAY 19 - MAY 25, 2009
EDEN LOG (dir: Franck
Vestiel, R) – It’s cool that the French are starting to venture more into science fiction and horror films. I think everybody was a little fed up with all those movies that were just talk, talk, talk. |
FANBOYS (dir: Kyle Newman, PG-13) – We’ve isolated the reason this STAR WARS-themed comedy has been sitting in a vault for 3 years and is only know being released on an unsuspecting public. The reason is its monumental
suckiness. |
THE GRAY MAN (dir: Scott L. Flynn, R) – Not
enough gore for gorehounds but too grizzly for normal people, this
bio-pic of Albert Fish is bound to please nobody. |
KEPT AND DREAMLESS (dir: Martín De Salvo / Vera
Fogwill, Not Rated) – A young girl takes care of her promiscuous druggie mother in this drama set against the turbulent backdrop of Argentina’s financial meltdown in the
1990s. |
^MUNYURANGABO (dir: Lee Isaac Chung, Not Rated) – Two young Rwandan boys take a memorable road trip in this month’s Film Movement selection. This was the winner of the Grand Jury prize at the AFI Film Festival. |
MY BLOODY VALENTINE (dir: Patrick
Lussier, R) – This horror movie
was released theatrically in 3-D, which sounds either awesome/terrifying or a lame way of trying to make a bad movie better. I’m guessing on the latter explanation. |
OUTLANDER (dir: Howard McCain, R) – Jim Caviezel plays a futuristic time traveler who cruises through history to the time of the Vikings. It’s BEOWULF meets PREDATOR! |
PAUL BLART: MALL COP (dir: Steve Carr, PG) – When it comes to comedy, could it really get funnier than a chubby guy falling down repeatedly? |
*RUSSELL BRAND: IN NEW YORK CITY (dir: Stefanie Clark, Not Rated) – Primarily known in America as the scene stealing rocker in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, Russell Brand is a full blown
pop culture phenomenon in his native England. The perils of fame are lovingly
recounted in this hilarious set filmed for Comedy Central. |
VALKYRIE (dir: Bryan Singer, PG-13) – Tom Cruise obviously doesn’t care that everybody thinks he’s loony. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have had his comeback vehicle be a movie where he runs around wearing an eye patch. |
YONKERS JOE (dir: Robert
Celestino, R) – Chazz Palminteri stars as a gambling lifer desperate to make one last score rolling the dice. His plan is complicated by the sudden reappearance of his adult son who wants to learn the ropes. |
