NEW MOVIES!  JUNE 2 - JUNE 8, 2009

^ALEXANDRA (dir: Aleksandr Sokurov, Not Rated) – In the latest film from RUSSIAN ARK director Aleksandr Sokurov, an elderly woman goes to visit her grandson at his Army camp in Chechnya and has serious misgivings about his military service there. No wonder Vladimir Putin banned it.

*CRIPS AND BLOODS: MADE IN AMERICA (dir: Stacy Peralta, Not Rated) – This brilliant documentary closely examines the bloody gang war that has plagued Los Angeles for forty years. This may seem like strange material for Stacy Peralta, the director of DOGTOWN & Z BOYS and RIDING GIANTS, but he has created an incendiary masterpiece.

DEAR ZACHARY: A LETTER TO A SON ABOUT HIS FATHER (dir: Kurt Kuenne, Not Rated) – Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne set out to memorialize his dead friend with a documentary about his life. But then it emerged that his murderess was pregnant with his child and had fled to Canada and his film went in a very different direction. Oh, and Canada really sucks about not extraditing murderesses.
DEFIANCE (dir: Edward Zwick, R) – Remember in KNOCKED UP when Seth Rogen is talking about how he liked MUNICH because it was the movie where Jews got to be action heroes? Well, this movie about three Jewish brothers kicking Nazi butt is long overdue.

FIGHT NIGHT (dir: Jonathan Dillon, R) – A con man and a really sweaty lady roam the country rigging underground fights in which she fights men twice her size. The list of enemies they make quickly catches up with them.

FOX AND THE CHILD (dir: Luc Jacquet, G) – The creators of MARCH OF THE PENGUINS return with another animal-based family film. A young girl befriends a beautiful and mysterious fox who may or may not be a version of Jesus.
HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU (dir: Ken Kwapis, PG-13) – Wow. What a cast. This is like a romantic comedy produced by Irwin Allen. Throw in a towering inferno or an earthquake and I might even watch it.

HOME (dir: Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Not Rated) – This snazzy documentary features aerial photography of our planet that blows away PLANET EARTH. It’s even worth having to listen to Glenn Close lecture us about how we’re screwing up the environment for two hours.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (dir: Sam Mendes, R) – Just because Kate and Leo’s second film together wasn’t quite the hit TITANIC was is no reason to fret. This classy adaptation of Richard Yates’ classic novel of suburban ennui in 1950s Connecticut won some terrific reviews.

SPRING BREAKDOWN (dir: Ryan Shiraki, R) – How they convinced Parker Posey and Amy Poehler to star in a goofy spring break movie is unimportant. The fact is, despite one of the goofiest covers on DVD, this utilizes those funny ladies fairly well.
