NEW
MOVIES! JUNE 16 - JUNE 22, 2009
THE BURROWERS (dir:
J.T. Petty, R) –
It's a Western. It's a Monster Movie. It's a Western Monster Movie!
Rent this along with last month's Aliens Vs. Vikings flick,
OUTLANDER. |
THE CELL 2 (dir: Tim
Iacofano, R) –
Nobody asked for a sequel to J-Lo's beautiful but brainless slasher
flick from almost a decade ago, but here's one anyway. |
ELSEWHERE (dir: Nathan Hope, R) –
It was cool to see Portland, Maine's own Anna Kendrick in a
medium-sized role in TWILIGHT, and she sure did impress us all as the
ruthless debate team captain in ROCKET SCIENCE. Now getcha some more
Anna Kendrick in this routine teen thriller. |
FRIDAY THE 13TH (dir: Marcus
Nispel, R) –
I hope someday they put all the Jasons from all dozen or so FRIDAY
THE 13TH movies together into one big free-for-all grudge match
movie called JASON VS. INFINITE JASONS. |
GARBAGE WARRIOR (dir: Oliver Hodge, Not Rated) –
Hippie architect extraordinaire Michael Reynolds builds homes he
calls "spaceships" out of tires, soda cans and other junk in this
acclaimed documentary. |
JESSE STONE: THIN ICE (dir: Robert Harmon, Not Rated) –
I'm pretty sure we started the
rumor that Tom Selleck was in the middle of filming a MAGNUM, P.I.
movie. He claims no such project exists, but at least we put that
bug in his ear, so who knows, someday...
MADEA GOES TO JAIL (dir: Tyler Perry, PG-13) –
Jim Varney may be dead, but at least the Ernest legacy has been
passed on to an elderly, gun-toting, Southern black transvestite. |
MORNING LIGHT (dir: Mark Monroe, PG) –
Is this the welcome return of the Disney true-life documentary feature tradition
or just a boring reality TV-inspired sailing contest?
You decide. |
THE PERFECT SLEEP (dir: Jeremy Alter, R) –
Too bad the ambitions greatly exceed the budget of this
clever film noir homage/update/parody.
Coulda been a real doozy.
^A SONG OF INNOCENCE (dir: Antoine Santana, Not Rated) –
This French period piece about a young wet-nurse from the country,
and the aristocratic couple that employs her, might just be the least
sleazy movie about boobs you'll ever see. |
WERE THE WORLD MINE (dir: Tom Gustafson, Not Rated) –
Certainly not cinema's first gay musical, but the first I can think
of where homosexuality is the subject, not just the context. |
WHAT GOES UP (dir: Jonathan
Glatzer, R) –
Hillary Duff in a non-kiddie movie and Steve Coogan in a non-comedic
role - fans of either star are guaranteed to be disappointed by this
80s-set indie snoozer. |
*THE WINDOW
(dir: Carlos Sorin, Not Rated) – The Argentine director of
INTIMATE STORIES returns with the tale of an old man who's got to
somehow get his piano tuned before his estranged pianist son pays
him a visit on his 80th birthday. |
