NEW
MOVIES! JUNE 23 - JUNE 29, 2009
BACKWOODS (dir: Marty Weiss, R) – Haylie Duff, the noticeably less attractive and talented sister of
Hillary, settles for the lead in this quickie paintball-themed horror film. |
BOB FUNK (dir: Craig Carlisle, R) – Critic Stuart Alson claims this is Rachel Leigh Cook’s best film since SHE’S ALL THAT. Whoa. Let’s slow down a little before we start making outrageous claims,
Stu. |
BUNNY CHOW (dir: John Barker, Not Rated) – Three struggling comedians embark on a road trip with a goofy stranger to South Africa’s biggest music festival, in this spirited comedy from Global Lens. |
THE CODE (dir: Mimi
Leder, R) – Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman play rival thieves who reluctantly work together to snag some Faberge Eggs in this
straight-to-DVD caper from the
director of PAY IT FORWARD. |
CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC (dir:
P.J. Hogan, PG) – If there was ever a movie that captured the nation’s spirit at the right time, it has to be this comedic fantasy about an obnoxious rich girl living a glamorous life without financial repercussions. |
DRAGON HUNTERS (dir: Guillaume Ivernel / Arthur
Qwak, PG) – It’s not Pixar, but this French production should satiate
your animation craving until something more substantial comes along. |
THE GARTH METHOD (dir: Gregory Pakis, Not Rated) –
Supposedly this is a documentary about an Australian actor who kidnapped people and forced them to perform in his bizarre movies. But, honestly, I think there is a 99% chance that this is either a mockumentary or a BLAIR WITCH-style hoax. |
HOME (dir: Mary
Haverstick, PG-13) – Marcia Gay Harden stars as a woman whose crumbling marriage is bumming her out.
But her sense of self flourishes when she buys an old house to restore her relationship with her 8-year-old daughter. |
INKHEART (dir: Iain
Softley, PG) – Brendan Fraser, never one to be afraid of embarrassment, takes the lead in this goofy children’s film based on some beloved British book. |
PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND (dir: Daniel
Barnz, PG-13) – Did you know that Dakota Fanning had herself
cloned and, under the guise of it being a younger sister, launched the creature on an acting
career? This purported “Elle” Fanning now gets all the roles that Dax is a bit long in the tooth for. Like this fairly impressive portrayal of a girl with Tourette Syndrome. |
THE PINK PANTHER 2 (dir: Harald
Zwart, PG) – Steve Martin, you know the rules. If Beyonce says no, I say no. |
*SIMON SAYS (dir: William Dear, R) – Crispin Glover playing evil twins, you say? Terrorizing one of the hotties from GOSSIP GIRL? Okay, I’m sold. |
TABLE FOR THREE (dir: Michael
Samonek, R) – The career of Brandon Routh, the current Superman, continues to go nowhere with this drab romantic comedy also starring Jesse
Bradford and Sophia Bush. |
^WALTZ WITH BASHIR (dir: Ari
Folman, R) – An Israeli war vet reluctantly unearths memories of his war experiences in an attempt to
purge a recurring nightmare, in this revolutionary animated film that astounded audiences worldwide. |
THE WORKSHOP (dir: Jamie Morgan, Not Rated) – In the rural woods of northern California, a bunch of kooks hang out naked in an effort to reach a higher plain of existence. |
