NEW MOVIES!  JULY 7 - JULY 13, 2009

^CHERRY BLOSSOMS (dir: Doris Dorrie, Not Rated) – A German couple return to Berlin after living in Japan for many years only to be faced with many unpredicted hardships. This ecstatically reviewed film is from one of Germany’s top directors, Doris Dorrie.

COCO CHANEL (dir: Christian Duguay, PG) – Expect campiness as Shirley MacLaine hams it up as the legendary clothing designer. This grabbed some nominations at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild though so maybe it’s okay.

A DAY IN THE LIFE (dir: Sticky Fingaz, R) – Rapper Sticky Fingaz makes his long-awaited directorial debut with this gritty drama about two warring inner city families.
FIVE FINGERS (dir: Laurence Malkin, R) – Would you buy Ryan Phillipe as an idealistic Dutch pianist named Martijn? How about Laurence Fishburne as a Moroccan terrorist? Odds are this long-shelved drama will require a certain suspension of disbelief.

GARRISON KEILLOR: THE MAN ON THE RADIO IN THE RED SHOES (dir: Peter Rosen, Not Rated) – If you’re nuts for Garrison Keillor, this documentary about him might keep you awake. Otherwise, this is equivalent to about four Ambien. Either way, enjoy!

*KNOWING (dir: Alex Proyas, PG-13) – In this grandly goofy and very satisfying Nicolas Cage thriller, the man with the strangest hair in Hollywood must sort through cryptic numerology in order to prevent awesome CGI disasters.
NIGHT TRAIN (dir: Brian King, R) – There’s no way this is going to rival MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, but there’s no denying that thrillers set on subway trains are very chic right now. I heard the next BOURNE film is going to be entirely in the Paris Metro.

NURSERY UNIVERSITY (dir: Marc H. Simon, Not Rated) – If you feel like throwing up in your mouth, this documentary about privileged Manhattan-ites ruthlessly jockeying to get their spawn into the best New York nursery schools should you have you gagging within minutes.

ONE WEEK (dir: Michael McGowan, Not Rated) – So Joshua Jackson finally got out of DAWSON’S CREEK. Coolsies. Now he’s got a motorcycle and a leather jacket and thinks he’s special because he’s thinking about death. Yeah, THAT’LL make us forget you crying every three seconds at 9 am on TBS.
PUSH (dir: Paul McGuigan, PG-13) – If there is any difference between JUMPER and this I’d like a detailed explanation. I guess you do get dopey Chris Evans instead of dopey Hayden Christensen.

RESOLVED (dir: Greg Whiteley, PG-13) – Take a gander at the fascinating world of high school debate teams in this engaging documentary which features appearances by former debaters Jane Pauley and, erm, Karl Rove.

TOKYO! (dir: Michel Gondry / Leos Carax / Joon-ho Bong, Not Rated) – Three of the planet’s most interesting directors, Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-Ho, offer up short films all set in that neon future utopia of the title.

THE UNBORN (dir: David S. Goyer, PG-13) – What might have been a routine horror film about a demon bothering an attractive young lady is elevated exponentially by the presence of Gary Oldman as a mystic named Sendak.
