NEW
MOVIES! JULY 28 - AUGUST 3, 2009
AN AMERICAN AFFAIR (dir: William Olsson, Not Rated) – Whoa. According to this docudrama that could probably use a tad more sleaze, JFK was a philanderer! |
ANGEL OF DEATH (dir: Paul
Etheredge, Not Rated) – Zoe Bell, the cool real life stuntwoman who rolled around the hood of a very fast moving car in DEATH PROOF, plays an assassin who, after accidentally killing a young girl, has a change of heart. |
BART GOT A ROOM (dir: Brian
Hecker, PG-13) – Apparently, this is imposter mumblecore. If you’re looking for authentic
mumblecore, don’t be tempted by this interloper. |
*BIG MAN JAPAN (dir: Hitoshi Matsumoto, PG-13) – In this goofy ode to the Japanese monster movies of the past, an eccentric man who lives a solitary life periodically transforms into a 40-foot giant to battle whatever emerges from the ocean. |
DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION (dir: James Wong, PG) – Something about noble warriors saving the world from eternal darkness. I think trading cards are involved. Wow, I wonder how they got Chow
Yun-Fat to be in this. He must have grandkids. |
FAST & FURIOUS (dir: Justin Lin, PG-13) – There’s only one Vin Diesel. We all know that. His returning to this trusty series of automotive pornography is like Christmas in July. Don’t get too excited about that Michelle Rodriguez appearance though. It’s brief. |
GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT (dir: Lauren Montgomery, PG-13) – So they’re doing a Green Lantern movie with Ryan Reynolds. To get everyone’s juices flowing about this prospect they’ve rushed out this hard-edged feature length anime. Let this plant the seed of interest in your brain and then next summer you can pay too much money to see Ryan Reynolds in a lot of spandex. Congratulations, you’re a target market. |
KILLER AT LARGE (dir: Steven
Greenstreet, Not Rated) – Did you know fatty foods are bad for you? Let this helpful documentary tell you all about it. Former fast food victim Bill Clinton is on hand to verify the charges. |
MISS MARCH (dir: Zach Cregger / Trevor Moore, R) – This movie, in an act of supreme irreverence, stole the plot of the J. Geils Band song,
Centerfold. |
^MOMMA'S MAN (dir: Azazel Jacobs, Not Rated) – In a supposedly brief respite from adult responsibility, a thirtysomething father and husband takes refuge in the byzantine Manhattan loft he grew up in. His relationship with his parents quickly regresses and he finds the adult world a hard place to think about returning to. In a slightly creepy twist, the director cast his actual parents and their loft in the film. I suppose making some badly lit indie film would be cheaper than family therapy. |
POP SKULL (dir: Adam
Wingard, Not Rated) – An Alabama pill addict must wrestle with his demons as well as the very real murderous ghosts haunting his house. |
STREETS OF BLOOD (dir: Charles Winkler, R) – Here’s a car crash worth rubbernecking for. Val
Kilmer, 50 Cent and Sharon “Craziest Woman In Hollywood” Stone star in this cop drama set in New Orleans immediately after Hurricane Katrina. Why? How? |
TRUE TRUE LIE (dir: Eric Styles, R) – A young woman is released after twelve years in an insane asylum, still under the incorrect impression that she was responsible for the death of a young boy. As she learns the truth, her former friends become the focus of her growing anger. |
