NEW MOVIES!  AUGUST 11 - AUGUST 17, 2009

ALIEN TRESPASS (dir: R.W. Goodwin, PG) – This largely unseen spoof of 50s sci-fi movies got some good notices upon its limited release and hopefully will find an audience on DVD. It captures the look and feel of those films perfectly, without resorting to pandering.

APRES LUI (dir: Gael Morel, Not Rated) – The legendary Catherine Deneuve adds another terrific performance to her resume with this small drama about a grieving mother who gets a little too intimate with her dead son’s best friend.

THE ART OF WAR III: RETRIBUTION (dir: Gerry Lively, R) – As Jay-Z wisely informed us, rapping is a young man’s game. Luckily for the likes of Treach, of Naughty By Nature, there’s a retirement plan that involves acting in straight-to-DVD action movies.
^THE CLASS (dir: Laurent Cantet, PG-13) – From terrific young director Laurent Cantet, this story of the struggles of a young teacher to gain the respect of his melting pot classroom nailed down the Palme D’Or at Cannes and was nominated for an Academy Award. Oh, and it’s based on the memoirs of the guy that plays the teacher.

GIGANTIC (dir: Matt Aselton, R) – Oh, dear. For the zillionth time, Zooey Deschanel plays a girl far too quirky to be tamed by the world of normals. Time to get some new schtick, honey.

GOOBY (dir: Wilson Coneybeare, PG) – A little spazzy kid is so freaked out by his new house that he makes a giant teddy bear voiced by Robbie Coltrane come to life to protect him. The National Society of Bedwetters gave this 5 out of 5 cold puddles of urine.
THE GOODTIMESKID (dir: Azazel Jacobs, Not Rated) – Heavily influenced by the French New Wave, MOMMA’S MAN director Azazel Jacobs weaves an annoying tapestry of chance encounters that’s like CRASH for hipster trash. Oh, and in a move so pretentious it’s staggering, this was shot entirely on stolen film.

*HARVARD BEATS YALE 29-29 (dir: Kevin Rafferty, Not Rated) – The turbulence of 1968 is the backdrop for this documentary set at the end of the Ivy League football season when the two undefeated teams of the title met in a game that became legendary. We’re talking HOOP DREAMS-level of quality here.

I LOVE YOU, MAN (dir: John Hamburg, R) – Certified world’s coolest dude Paul Rudd is finally starting to get some leading roles and it’s sweet justice. Here he plays a guy getting married who realizes he doesn’t have the guy friend necessary for best man duties. Enter Jason Segal and the bro-mance of the century ensues.
KATYN (dir: Andrzej Wajda, Not Rated) – Some 22,000 Polish officers were slaughtered in the Russian forest of the title by Stalin’s troops in 1940. This Academy Award nominated re-telling from Andrezej Wajda has been lauded with glowing reviews. If that’s the sort of thing you feel like experiencing in brutal, unflinching widescreen terms.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON (dir: Paul Andrew Williams, R) – It’s a cockney THELMA & LOUISE after a prostitute and a young runaway ice a pervy mobster and have to hit the road.

LONELY STREET (dir: Peter Ettinger, R) – Jay Mohr, hitting rock bottom, plays a wacky private detective in this soon-to-be-forgotten DVD premiere.
ONE DAY YOU'LL UNDERSTAND (dir: Amos Gitai, Not Rated) – A family’s complicated secret history is explored in this understated drama from celebrated Israeli director Amos Gitai.

PARIS 36 (dir: Christophe Barratier, PG-13) – The French guys behind THE CHORUS and WINGED MIGRATION serve up this extravagant musical set against the political and economic turmoil of France in the days leading up to WWII.

PAVEE LACKEEN: THE TRAVELLER GIRL (dir: Perry Ogden, Not Rated) – Winnie, a young traveler girl, experiences all the hardships you might expect living a third world life in modern, prosperous Ireland.
ROAD TRIP: BEER PONG (dir: Steve Rash, Unrated) – Yeahhh. So if you guys could just stop renting movies like this, we’ll stop having to buy them.

17 AGAIN (dir: Burr Steers, PG-13) – I guess it’s fitting that the Kirk Cameron of his generation, Zac Efron, would make this blatant rip-off of LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON.

STEPPIN (dir: Michael Taliferro, PG-13) – In the tradition of DRUMLINE and STOMP THE YARD comes this movies about a group of college kids striving to be the best at whatever stepping is.

THE TIGER'S TAIL (dir: John Boorman, R) – Brendan Gleeson plays a wealthy Irishman who’s convinced that he’s being stalked by a doppelganger. For no apparent reason, Kim Cattrall plays his wife.
