NEW MOVIES!  AUGUST 18 - AUGUST 24, 2009

BRIDGE TO NOWHERE (dir: Blair Underwood, R) – A bunch of Pittsburgh dirtbags get the crazy idea to improve their circumstances by starting a prostitution ring. But here’s the rub: Bijou Phillips is one of the hos. And if anybody knows how to be a successful ho, it’s crazy old Bijou.

DEXTER: SEASON 3 (dir: James Manos Jr., Not Rated) – America’s most loveable serial killer is back. Hopefully his stupid British girlfriend that ruined season 2 is not.

^THE GARDEN (dir: Scott Hamilton Kennedy, Not Rated) – This nominee for Best Documentary Academy Award is an in depth look at America’s largest urban farm, which was built in South Central Los Angeles after the 1992 riots. Inevitably, dum-dum bureaucrats try to ruin everything.
THE GOLDEN BOYS (dir: Daniel Adams, PG) – A few weeks ago, we erroneously reported that we had received the last David Carradine movie made before his death. Well, we’ve been wrong before but never to this degree. I looked that dude up on imbd.com and he still has about 25 movies awaiting release. Dude ain’t dead. Dude is in Cuba with Tupac and Jim Morrison.

GOSSIP GIRL: SEASON 2 (dir: Stephanie Savage, Not Rated) – Another season of super-rich New York prep school kids doing lots of age inappropriate stuff. Expect some really good STD scares this season!

HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (dir: Peter Chelsom, G) – Much like Hitchcock’s PSYCHO and Bergman’s PERSONA, HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE is about a person with dueling identities. Is Miley Stewart, as played by Miley Cyrus, a small town girl with humble dreams or a global rock star set for world domination? Or is the split in her personality resulting from a fractured parenting issue ala Norman Bates? I mean, we’ve all seen Billy Ray’s mullet from the Achy Breaky era. It wasn’t pretty. It’s actually the sort of thing that could very easily trigger a ripcord of unease in a young girl.
JULIA (dir: Erick Zonca, R) – In this loose homage to GLORIA, Tilda Swinton plays a morally conflicted, possibly sociopathic woman who gets involved in a criminal scheme that rapidly spirals out of control.

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (dir: Dennis Iliadis, Not Rated) – As unpleasant as the original version of Wes Craven’s shocker was, it had some validity as far as pushing the boundaries of American cinema. But after years of SAW sequels is there really anything in here that’s going to titillate the jaded tastebuds of horror fans?

*SOMERS TOWN (dir: Shane Meadows, Not Rated) – Here’s another winner from Shane Meadows, the director of THIS IS ENGLAND. Two young boys forge an unlikely friendship in a rough area of London while dealing with exciting problems like homelessness, inattentive parents and falling in love with French waitresses.
SURVEILLANCE (dir: Jennifer Chambers Lynch, R) – David Lynch’s daughter, Jennifer, returns to directing after the disastrous BOXING HELENA and this time she serves up a winner. A grisly highway murder is recounted from several perspectives, including FBI agents Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond.

THE UNION: THE BUSINESS BEHIND GETTING HIGH (dir: Brett Harvey, Not Rated) – Remember when you visited Vancouver and were inundated with that curiously fragrant smell wafting out of every window? That was the smell of Vacouver’s biggest industry, marijuana! Although technically illegal, those crazy British Columbians are so hopped up on that stuff Tommy Chong advised the city to “cool out a bit.”

THE WILD MAN OF THE NAVIDAD (dir: Duane Graves / Justin Meeks, Not Rated) – This low rent monster flick aims to revive the sleazy exploitation drive-in scene of the 1970s… and succeeds!
