NEW
MOVIES! SEPTEMBER 1 - SEPTEMBER 7, 2009
BRING IT ON: FIGHT TO THE FINISH (dir: Bille Woodruff, PG-13) – Wow. They’re really milking this thing for all it’s worth. I think the teet is getting a bit chapped, you know? I hope Kirsten Dunst is getting mad residuals. |
EARTH (dir: Alastair Fothergill / Mark
Linfield, G) – This beautifully filmed documentary was released for Earth Day by Disney’s new nature themed subdivision. It’ll probably look really great if you have an IMAX theater in your house. |
FOUR EYED MONSTERS (dir: Susan Buice / Arin
Crumley, Not Rated) – Something about young daters who are so disgusted by the process of dating that they refuse to communicate with each other except by passing a notepad back and forth. And part of it is animated. I think I’m going to throw up. Parents, please take note of this. Every time your child brings home a terrible painting or story and you blindly encourage them and make them feel that their talent is special, you’re increasing the odds that you’ll spend the rest of your life paying the bills of an unemployed multimedia artist. America, you’re spawning a nation of
timmys. |
GOOD DICK (dir: Marianna
Palka, R) – Marianna Palka wrote, directed and stars in this indie romance about a lonely, introverted young woman who is pursued by an equally quirky young man. This offbeat romance was a big hit at Sundance. |
THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE (dir: Todd
Rohal, Not Rated) – A ten-year-old girl named Turkeylegs navigates a strange small town during a massive power outage in this indie that “Bristles with anarchic visual language.” |
HEROES: SEASON 3 (dir: Tim
Kring, Not Rated) – Remember when the first episode and a half of this show was really fun and intriguing? Well, season 3 is here and, no, it hasn’t improved. It’s now just trying to trick you with LOST-style confusion. |
THE MEERKATS (dir: James
Honeyborne, G) – Paul Newman narrates this nature thingy about some mongoosey things that live in Siberia or
someplace. |
*SIN NOMBRE (dir: Cary
Fukunaga, R) – This mindblowingly awesome film follows the perilous journey of a beautiful Honduran girl as she journeys northward through Mexico seeking the promise of America. It’s like EL NORTE with way scarier tattooed Mexican gang members. |
STATE OF PLAY (dir: Kevin Macdonald, PG-13) – Next time you hear an older person complaining that Hollywood doesn’t make any serious movies for adults, remind them how nobody went to see STATE OF PLAY in the theater even though it’s a cracking good time. Next summer when the only movie playing stars Hannah Montana as a robot that turns into a car, you can be really smug about it and tell them that it’s their fault. |
^SUGAR (dir: Ryan Fleck / Anna
Boden, PG-13) – The team that directed the beloved HALF NELSON return with their second film, a small gem about the journey of a baseball phenom from poverty in the Dominican Republic to the major leagues. Even Pedro Martinez says it’s very realistic and has a great message. |
