NEW MOVIES!  OCTOBER 13 - OCTOBER 19, 2009

ADORATION (dir: Atom Egoyan, R) – In the latest challenging drama from Atom Egoyan, an orphaned teenager re-imagines his family history through the prism of a fictional terrorist act. When he posts his story on the internet and it's mistaken for fact, all hell breaks loose. Stupid internet.

AMERICAN VIOLET (dir: Tim Disney, PG-13) – An African-American single mother struggles to clear her name after she is accused of dealing drugs in this very boring drama starring Alfre Woodard and Will Patton.

DRAG ME TO HELL (dir: Sam Raimi, Unrated) – After three SPIDER-MAN movies, Sam Raimi returns to his horror roots with this gonzo flick about a cursed bank employee who mistakenly foreclosed on the wrong crazy old demon lady.
EVERY LITTLE STEP (dir: Adam Del Deo / James D. Stern, PG-13) – Did you ever wonder what people go through when they audition for a Broadway musical? Neither did I. Nobody wonders that.

FERMAT'S ROOM (dir: Luis Piedrahita / Rodrigo Sopena, Not Rated) – Do you enjoy the SAW films but wish they would cut down on the gore and add more math? Well, you might enjoy this Spanish thriller about four mathematicians trapped in a shrinking room by a madman. They can only get out by solving challenging mathematical riddles.

^FROWNLAND (dir: Ronald Bronstein, Not Rated) – If you like your comedies awkward and disturbing, you'll surely appreciate this indie about a man so socially stunted he can barely form a sentence. Understandably this causes problems since he's a door to door salesman. It's also really gross how he eats eggs.
THE HAUNTED AIRMAN (dir: Chris Durlacher, R) – That sexy vampire Robert Pattinson plays a bummed out war vet in a wheelchair who starts having disturbing visions after being confined to a dreary hospital. Guaranteed to be hated by every TWILIGHT fan on Earth!

IMURDERS (dir: Robbie Bryan, Not Rated) – Here it is. The first online social networking themed horror film.

IN A DREAM (dir: Jeremiah Zagar, Not Rated) – This documentary is about Isaiah and Julia Zagar, who have spent the last thirty years covering Philadelphia in their crazy art.
INFESTATION (dir: Kyle Rankin, R) – Portland's own Kyle and Effram return after their infamous appearance on PROJECT: GREENLIGHT with a sci-fi comedy about a slacker that has to contend with a lot of bugs from outer space.

THE KILLING ROOM (dir: Jonathan Liebesman, R) – Nick Cannon, Clea Duvall, Timothy Hutton and some other weirdos discover they're being subjected to a sinister government experiment. Apparently the government thought ripping off the SAW films would make an interesting experiment.

LAND OF THE LOST (dir: Brad Silberling, PG-13) – There are some amusing bits in this lazy Will Ferrell update of the 1970s schlock-fest, most of them courtesy of the brilliant Danny McBride. Should they have spent 150 million bucks on it though? Umm, no.
*LEFT BANK (dir: Pieter Van Hees, Not Rated) – This brooding thriller from Belgium follows the strange events taking place in an Antwerp apartment building. Harkening back to classic chillers like ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE WICKER MAN, LEFT BANK is a classy addition to the annals of European horror.

NEW WORLD ORDER (dir: Luke Meyer / Andrew Neel, Not Rated) – It's like TREKKIES with conspiracy theory dorks. Learn all about what really happened on 9/11, who killed Kennedy and what's buried under the Washington monument... if you dare.

THE OBJECTIVE (dir: Daniel Myrick, Not Rated) – A group of soldiers on patrol in Afghanistan experience escalating unexplained phenomena. Since this is about the 5th horror or sci-fi movie that has come out recently set in either Iraq or Afghanistan I guess it's now officially open season on exorcising your angst about national quagmires through genre cinema.
100 FEET (dir: Eric Red, Unrated) – Uh-oh. Famke Jannsen killed her abusive husband but now she's going to have to get rid of his ghost.

THE PROPOSAL (dir: Anne Fletcher, PG-13) – At this stage of the game, who does Sandra Bullock think she is making a halfway funny movie?

SECRECY (dir: Peter Galison / Robb Moss, Not Rated) – Oh great. Another documentary about how everything the government does is a big conspiracy. Don't rent this with NEW WORLD ORDER or you'll go on a list.

WOODPECKER (dir: Alex Karpovsky, Not Rated) – In this strangely uplifting documentary (or is it?), a depressed small town in Arkansas is revitalized by the discovery of a thought to be extinct woodpecker.
