NEW MOVIES!  DECEMBER 1 - DECEMBER 7, 2009

A CHRISTMAS TALE (dir: Arnaud Desplechin, Not Rated) – The grand dame of cougar-hood, Catherine Deneuve, heads up a large cast in this instant holiday classic. The sprawling Vuillard family gathers at Christmas and all the old grudges, rivalries and requests for bone marrow transplants you’d expect materialize.

EVANGELION:1.01 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE. (dir: Hideaki Anno, PG-13) – If the word EVANGELION means anything to you, this is a very exciting moment because it means the new EVANGELION movie is out. Otherwise, please ignore this.

THE GIRL IN THE PARK (dir: David Auburn, R) – Sigourney Weaver plays a successful businesswoman whose life is torn apart by the mysterious disappearance of her young daughter. Sixteen years later Kate Bosworth shows up claiming to be the girl, but unleashes a pattern of unusual behavior. Bad things surely follow.
INTO THE STORM (dir: Thaddeus O'Sullivan, Not Rated) – This continuation of THE GATHERING STORM follows Winston Churchill into WWII but replaces Albert Finney with Brendan Gleeson. It didn’t win the accolades of the first film but is still a fascinating slice of 20th century history.

LIVE! (dir: Bill Guttentag, R) – B&G’s fave Eva Mendes plays a ruthless television executive who comes up with the idea for the deadliest game show ever in this long-delayed thriller.

MUSHI-SHI: THE MOVIE (dir: Katsuhiro Otomo, Not Rated) – The director of AKIRA and STEAMBOY returns with this live action version of a popular anime series about a Mushi Master who wanders the countryside protecting people from the dangers of the Mushi, which are mythical and mischievous creatures that can unleash illness in unsuspecting humans.
^MY EFFORTLESS BRILLIANCE (dir: Lynn Shelton, Not Rated) – The director of HUMPDAY unleashes another bro-mance for the ages with this earlier effort about two dudes hanging out in a cabin in rural Washington trying to rejuvenate their faded friendship.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN (dir: Shawn Levy, PG) – Rather than watch this lame sequel, look up Ben Stiller on Youtube being master of ceremonies at Wal-Mart’s shareholders convention in Arkansas last year. It’s the grossest act of whoredom I’ve ever seen in my life.

PAPER HEART (dir: Nicholas Jasenovec, PG-13) – I guess at this point I wouldn’t mind too much if someone just punched Michael Cera in the face. It might even be good for him.
*PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL (dir: Gini Reticker, Not Rated) – You hear so many depressing things about Africa that it’s refreshing when a triumphant story emerges. In Liberia, ladies both Christian and Muslim got so fed up with the ongoing civil war that they banded together and shut it down.

TAKE OUT (dir: Sean Baker / Shih-Ching Tsou, Not Rated) – A day in the life of Chinese immigrant Ming Ding begins badly when hammer-wielding loan sharks show up at his apartment in Chinatown and demand $800. This fine example of the micro-budget cinema movement was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards this year.

TERMINATOR: SALVATION (dir: McG, PG-13) – You probably heard about Christian Bale’s vicious tirade at a crew member on the set of this movie and thought you wouldn’t bother seeing it because he’s mean or whatever. Now, take a moment and think about who would have the motivation for leaking that audio clip to the media. Who could possibly benefit from fewer people seeing this heroic film about man’s struggle against the machines? SKYNET. That’s who.
WE FEED THE WORLD (dir: Erwin Wagenhofer, Not Rated) – If we get one more stupid documentary about food somebody’s getting a slap. Latifah’s had it up to here!

YEAR OF THE FISH (dir: David Kaplan, Not Rated) – A recent arrival in New York’s Chinatown navigates sleazy massage parlors, hunchbacked fortune tellers and cranky co-workers in this adult fairy tale that utilizes the rotoscoping animation technique from WAKING LIFE.
