NEW
MOVIES! DECEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 28, 2009
ALL ABOUT STEVE (dir: Phil
Traill, PG-13) – She’s had a busy year cranking out hits like THE PROPOSAL and THE BLIND SIDE, but Sandra Bullock still found time to star in one of the worst reviewed comedies of 2009. |
AMERICAN PIE PRESENTS: THE BOOK OF LOVE (dir: John
Putch, R) – Eugene Levy, have you no shame? You’re going to be alone someday and, try as you might, you won’t be able to dry your tears with your AMERICAN PIE spin-off residuals. |
ANGUS, THONGS AND PERFECT SNOGGING (dir: Gurinder
Chadha, PG-13) – A British teenager, with the help of her flamboyantly gay cat, sets out to win over the boy of her dreams from her evil blonde archrival in this amusing coming of age comedy from the director of BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM. |
BEAUTIFUL LOSERS (dir: Aaron Rose, Not Rated) – You know those weird OBEY posters featuring Andre the Giant’s face you find on building walls and lamp posts? Hopefully this documentary about the underground NYC artists responsible for that and other stuff will explain what those posters are all about. |
BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT (dir: Peter
Hyams, PG-13) – A journalist frames himself for murder to expose the corruption of sleazy district attorney Michael Douglas. The most surprising thing here is that Michael Douglas has never played a sleazy district attorney before. |
BLIND DATE (dir: Stanley
Tucci, Not Rated) – In this remake of an acclaimed Dutch film, Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson star as a couple so paralyzed by their grief for their dead daughter that they go on a series of dates to try and reconnect with one another. This was made to honor the memory of the original’s director, Theo Van
Gogh, who was murdered on the streets of Amsterdam by a Muslim extremist after making a short film critical of Islam’s treatment of women. |
*DISTRICT 9 (dir: Neill
Blomkamp, R) – South Africa’s first great sci-fi film is here and it really sticks it to Hollywood by showing what you can do with a relatively small budget and bucketloads of imagination. |
EXTRACT (dir: Mike Judge, R) – OFFICE SPACE director Mike Judge returns with another savvy workplace comedy featuring lots of appealing actors such as Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig and
J.K. Simmons. He even gets an amusing performance out of Ben Affleck. |
(500) DAYS OF SUMMER (dir: Marc Webb, PG-13) – Despite mostly glowing reviews, I’m getting a very twee indie vibe off this. Did I mention that I kind of want to pour a bucket of pig blood on Zooey
Deschanel? |
^THE HEADLESS WOMAN (dir: Lucrecia Martel, Not Rated) – The director of THE HOLY GIRL and LA CIENAGA stays in top form with this thriller about a woman who becomes convinced she’s committed a hit and run and quickly descends into a heightened state of paranoia. |
ICHI (dir: Fumihiko
Sori, Not Rated) – Nope, Takashi Miike has not made another installment of ICHI THE KILLER. This is just a nice Japanese movie about a pretty, blind samurai lady. |
IT MIGHT GET LOUD (dir: Davis Guggenheim, PG) – The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White sit around and discuss why they can’t make any music that Greg likes. |
STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (dir: James
DeMonaco, R) – New York’s grossest borough gets its own movie! And what better dirtbag than Ethan Hawke to play a dirtbag trying to make a big score for his unborn dirtbag son? |
