NEW
MOVIES! APRIL 6 - APRIL 12, 2010
*BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL - NEW ORLEANS (dir: Werner Herzog, R) – There
was never really any doubt that Werner Herzog directing Nicolas Cage
in a reimagining of an insane Abel Ferarra film would be memorable.
And, as expected, Herzog lets Nic go totally bonkers, chewing the
scenery like it's beef jerky and talking to iguanas that don't
exist. You even get a little Val Kilmer for your buck. |
THE BLACK BALLOON (dir: Elissa Down, PG-13) – An
Australian teenager tries to woo the girl of his dreams without his
autistic brother messing everything up. Toni Collette co-stars as
the family matriarch. |
THE COLLECTOR (dir: Marcus Dunstan, R) – An
ex-con planning on robbing a wealthy family gets a shock when he
finds that a second, and far more dangerous, criminal has also
targeted the family. |
DROOL (dir: Nancy
Kissam, Not Rated) – An
abused wife accidentally kills her jerky husband and before she
knows it she's on a sweet road trip with her best friend. It's like
THELMA & LOUISE with a corpse in the trunk.
THE DUNGEON MASTERS (dir: Keven McAlester, Not Rated) – If
you thought the dorks in DARKON and MONSTER CAMP were pathetic, just
wait until you get a look at these D&D lifers. |
HARLEM ARIA (dir: William Jennings, R) – Despite
his limitations, a young, mentally challenged man from Harlem shoots
for opera stardom in this drama that is, depending on your outlook,
either manipulative and treacly or inspiring and understated. |
HIGH LIFE (dir: Gary Yates, R) – Timothy
Olyphant stars in this Canadian heist movie set in 1983 about a
group of junkies who decide to rob the newly installed ATM at the
local bank. Since they are a group of junkies, expect problems. |
JADE
WARRIOR (dir: Antti-Jussi Annila, PG-13) – You've been
waiting forever and it's finally here. The first Kung Fu movie from
Finland! |
ROBIN WILLIAMS: WEAPONS OF SELF DESTRUCTION (dir: Marty
Callner, Not Rated) – Following
on the success of his LIVE ON BROADWAY special from a few years ago,
Robin Williams once again rocks the mic. And with subjects like
Sarah Palin and his own heart surgery to draw on, he jams a lot in.
Not forgiving him for OLD DOGS though. Not yet. |
SHARPE'S PERIL (dir: Tom Clegg, Not Rated) – Sean
Bean is back as the popular swordsman and this time he's training a
group of ragtag soldiers to fight a legendary bandit who has been
robbing the East India Company's trains. |
SON OF MAN (dir: Mark
Dornford-May, Not Rated) – It
barely missed an Easter release but that's no reason to ignore this
reimagining of the life of Jesus Christ in modern South Africa. |
^TAXIDERMIA (dir: Gyorgy
Palfi, Not Rated) – The
Hungarian director of HUKKLE returns with a radically different film
about three generations of men in a very disturbing family. The
final result falls somewhere between DELICATESSEN and CALIGULA. |
YESTERDAY WAS A LIE (dir: James
Kerwin, PG) – A
female Phillip Marlowe-type tries to solve a mystery involving a
mysterious nightclub singer in this black & white-shot film noir
homage. |
