NEW
MOVIES! APRIL 20 - APRIL 26, 2010
AVATAR (dir: James Cameron, PG-13) – Unless it comes with a free IMAX theater I think I'll probably just leave well enough alone. It's been fun, AVATAR! |
*CRAZY HEART (dir: Scott Cooper, R) – While it’s true that there’s nearly nothing original in this movie that finally nabbed an Oscar for Jeff Bridges, most of you won’t care. The Dude brings such a lived-in believability to the role of a downwardly mobile country singer with a heart of gold and a solid drinking problem that it doesn’t matter that this could easily be a remake of TENDER MERCIES. |
THE DRAWN TOGETHER MOVIE: THE MOVIE! (dir: Greg Franklin, Not Rated) – While its claim of being the most offensive animated reality show ever to air is probably indisputable, the fact that there are enough fans of this unfunny misfire to warrant a feature film is more shocking than anything on the show. |
44 INCH CHEST (dir: Malcolm
Venville, R) – A who’s who of actors often seen in British gangster movies populate this latest nasty creation from the writers of SEXY BEAST. We’re talking Ray
Winstone, John Hurt, Ian McShane and even Tom Wilkinson. |
HOMECOMING (dir: Morgan J. Freeman, R) – Mischa Barton is back! In this routine straight-to-DVD thriller!
THE LOVELY BONES (dir: Peter Jackson, PG-13) – Hey, Peter Jackson. When I watch one of your movies I want some hobbits, a giant gorilla or some potty-mouthed puppets. What I don’t want is a depressing drama about a little dead girl. |
MAMMOTH (dir: Lukas
Moodysson, Not Rated) – Acclaimed Swedish director Lukas Moodysson makes his English language debut with this drama about the complexities of modern family life starring Michelle Williams and Gael Garcia Bernal. |
THE MISSING PERSON (dir: Noah
Buschel, Not Rated) – Michael Shannon plays a private investigator trailing someone who may be a 9/11 survivor gone missing in this neo-noir set on a train. |
ONE PEACE AT A TIME (dir: Turk
Pipkin, Not Rated) – Rather than just complaining about what's wrong in the world, this idealistic documentary went out and tried to fix it. Which may come off as naive to jaded cynics like you and me. Because it's true. Seriously, this planet is played out. |
PEACOCK (dir: Michael Lander, PG-13) – Cillian Murphy plays a small town bank clerk with a very big secret in this indie that also features Ellen Page, Susan Sarandon and Josh Lucas. |
PRESSURE COOKER (dir: Mark Becker / Jennifer
Grausman, Not Rated) –
This documentary follows three students enrolled in a culinary arts
class at a Philadelphia high school as they compete for a
scholarship to the nation's top cooking school. |
^SUMMER HOURS (dir: Olivier
Assayas, Not Rated) – French fave Olivier Assayas returns with a chatty drama about siblings squabbling over how to prepare for their mother's death. |
TALES FROM THE SCRIPT (dir: Peter Hanson, Not Rated) – Movie scribes including Shane Black, Frank Darabont and William Goldman share war stories about what it takes in Hollywood to get your words up on the screen in this documentary. |
TONY (dir: Gerard Johnson, Not Rated) – Trying to be the British
HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, this shocking docudrama follows a social misfit in a London slum as he goes about his business of killing homeless people. |
WAKE (dir: Ellie
Kanner, R) – Bijou Philips in a romantic comedy? I guess stranger things have happened. But why does that guy from LOST look like a zombie on the cover? |
THE WIND JOURNEYS (dir: Ciro Guerra, Not Rated) – After his wife dies, a legendary accordionist vows to never play music again and travels across Colombia to return his accordion to its rightful owner. Along the way he meets a spirited teenager who’s determined to become his apprentice. |
THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD (dir: Andy Bichlbaum / Mike
Bonanno, Not Rated) – Merry
hoaxsters The Yes Men continue their global pranking of corporate greed with this new film that sees them causing Dow Chemical’s stock to plunge by $2 billion and introducing a new miracle fuel from Exxon that doesn’t exist. |
THE YOUNG VICTORIA (dir: Jean-Marc
Vallée, PG) – Look, let’s just say that if you liked ELIZABETH, THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL and THE DUCHESS there is absolutely no reason to believe you wouldn’t like this as well. |
