NEW
MOVIES! APRIL 27 - MAY 3, 2010
CHEECH & CHONG'S HEY WATCH THIS (dir: Christian Charles, R) – The
joke on the box is so funny that I think I'll just use that. Cheech
and Chong are back with their first joint venture in 25 years. Get
it? "Joint" venture. Get it? |
COLOUR FROM THE DARK (dir: Ivan
Zuccon, Not Rated) –
A poor Italian farming family find their problems are getting worse
after they accidentally release a demon spirit from the bottom of the
well. |
DEADLY IMPACT (dir: Robert
Kurtzman, Unrated) – I
can't believe the straight-to-DVD action movie name generator hadn't
kicked this title out yet. |
THE DESCENT: PART 2 (dir: Jon Harris, R) – Spelunking
is probably a thrilling and interesting hobby to have. Personally
though, I find the possibility of some blind cave creature who wants
to eat my face discouraging. I saw THE DESCENT PART 1. I know what's
in there. |
DISGRACE (dir: Steve Jacobs, R) –
John
Malkovich is woefully miscast as a South African professor
who gets caught up in post-Apartheid politics in this unsuccessful
adaptation of J.M. Coetzee's award-winning novel. |
DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM (dir: Patrick
Alessandrin, R) – This
French action sequel ups the ante with at least 30% more parkour than the
original, DISTRICT B-13. Also, this movie has nothing to do with
DISTRICT 9. I know. It's confusing. |
FIVE MINUTES OF HEAVEN (dir: Oliver
Hirschbiegel, Not Rated) – Liam
Neeson plays a former UVF member in Northern Ireland who agrees to
meet with the younger brother of a man he killed in 1975. |
GEORGIA O'KEEFFE (dir: Bob
Balaban, Not Rated) – Joan
Allen takes on America's greatest lady painter ever in this Lifetime
bio-pic. |
*THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS (dir: Terry Gilliam, PG-13) – Two
years after his death, you can finally see Heath Ledger's last
performance. And, in a classy move, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin
Farrell complete his unfilmed scenes. |
IT'S COMPLICATED (dir: Nancy Meyers, R) – It's
great to see Alec Baldwin back on top. But I think that Meryl Streep
needs to be taken down a notch. When did she become so beloved? |
NINE DEAD (dir: Chris
Shadley, R) – Are
you really going to watch a horror movie starring Sabrina, The
Teenage Witch? |
STOIC (dir: Uwe Boll, Not Rated) – What
do you get when you combine the talents of the directing genius
behind BLOODRAYNE 2: DELIVERANCE (Uwe Boll) and a cracked out former
child actor who was only ever good in that one John Waters movie
(Edward Furlong)? A really, really crappy prison movie. That's what
you get. |
TENURE (dir: Mike Million, R) –
As long as Luke Wilson stops doing those pathetic Verizon
commercials, I don't care what the movie's about. |
^35 SHOTS OF RUM (dir: Claire Denis, Not Rated) – Claire
Denis returns with another of her trademarked French romantic
comedies. Kidding, of course. Here's another enigmatic drama about
the relationship between a father and daughter and the handsome
young man that comes between them. |
TRANSYLMANIA (dir: David Hillenbrand / Scott Hillenbrand,
Unrated) – I
think this is like EUROTRIP but also going for a bit of the vampire
craze cash-in as well. |
UNCERTAINTY (dir: Scott McGehee / David Siegel, Not Rated) –
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lynn Collins play a young couple whose
decisions trigger different possible outcomes, which we see all of.
Sort of like RUN LOLA RUN. Actually, exactly like RUN LOLA RUN. |
