NEW MOVIES!  MAY 11 - MAY 17, 2010

CLOUD 9 (dir: Andreas Dresen, Not Rated) – There was a time when if you wanted to watch German sex films about geriatric people you had to hang out in the Reeperbahn in Hamburg or Amsterdam's Red Light District. Now, thanks to the advent of the art film, you can safely watch this stuff at home. Seriously though, this movie about old German people doing it is supposed to be really great.

DAYBREAKERS (dir: Michael Spierig / Peter Spierig, R) – Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe star in this horror flick set in 2019, when a mysterious plague has turned the world's population into vampires. And we're not talking brooding poet-type vampires like TWILIGHT. We're talking nasty, blood-feast type vampires.

EARTH DAYS (dir: Robert Stone, Not Rated) – Rather than rub our faces in all the ways we're destroying our planet, this documentary focuses on all the good things environmental activists have done for our global ecosystem.
EDGE OF DARKNESS (dir: Martin Campbell, R) – Mel Gibson continues his strident march towards irrelevance with this listless remake of a British miniseries about a mad Dad hunting for his daughter's killer

EX DRUMMER (dir: Koen Mortier, Not Rated) – In this hyper-gritty look at the underground punk scene in Holland, a writer gets cajoled into picking up his drumsticks for the first time in a while to join a friend's band. Unfortunately, his addition accelerates the in-fighting and chaos reigns as the band starts to violently implode.

*THE HORSE BOY (dir: Michel O. Scott, Not Rated) – In this fascinating documentary, a couple from Texas travel with their autistic son to Mongolia in search of healing from local shaman. But, surprisingly, the breakthrough with their son comes from his interactions with the horses they are traveling with.
K-20: THE FIEND WITH TWENTY FACES (dir: Shimako Sato, Not Rated) – It's 1949 in Japan and WWII never happened. A phantom thief is on the loose and it's up to a vengeful circus acrobat to catch him.

LEGEND OF THE TSUNAMI WARRIOR (dir: Nonzee Nimibutr, R) – It's no secret that every action movie from Thailand is utterly insane. In a good way. In their latest export, an ancient seaside city is under attack and it's up to the local fisherman to use their special magic "Du-lum" to harness the power of the ocean in retaliation. Bonkers!

LEGION (dir: Scott Stewart, R) – Good and bad angels battle it out at a desert truck stop over the sacred unborn son of a local waitress in this special effect-laden horror flick starring Dennis Quaid and Paul Bettany.
MALICE IN WONDERLAND (dir: Simon Fellows, R) – Maggie Grace from LOST and TAKEN stars as an American student in London who, after being knocked unconscious by a taxi and awakening with amnesia, has a memorable night wandering through some of the city's more unsavory neighborhoods.

NAKED AMBITION: AN R RATED LOOK AT AN X RATED INDUSTRY (dir: Michael Grecco, R) – While obviously not sleaze-free, this documentary is remarkably uncondescending in its approach to adult film stars and their part in the expos that drive the business.

PAPER COVERS ROCK (dir: Joe Maggio, Not Rated) – Critics have heaped praise on the the lead performance in this well-regarded indie about a woman reclaiming her life after a suicide attempt.
POSSIBLE FILMS VOL. 2: NEW SHORTS BY HAL HARTLEY (dir: Hal Hartley, Not Rated) – Underrated former indie darling Hal Hartley hasn't made a feature since FAY GRIM and seems to be keeping a low profile lately. Here are some of the short films he's been keeping himself busy with lately.

SERAPHINE (dir: Martin Provost, Not Rated) – Seraphine Louis was an early 20th century French housekeeper with a secret. Inspired by her fervent religious beliefs, she became a self taught painter of great renown. This bio-pic focuses on her relationship with the German art critic who discovered her.

^TOKYO SONATA (dir: Kiyoshi Kurosawa, PG-13) – Japanese horror director Kiyoshi Kurosawa switches gears with this haunting drama about the slow disintegration of a family after Dad loses his job.
