NEW
MOVIES! AUGUST 17 - AUGUST 23, 2010
CEMETERY JUNCTION (dir: Ricky Gervais / Stephen Merchant, R) – I want to be excited about this new comedy from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. But why has nobody ever heard of it? Consider me cautiously optimistic. |
CHILDREN OF INVENTION (dir: Tze Chun, Not Rated) – Two kids are left to fend for themselves by living in an unused model apartment after their mother disappears in this low-budget drama. |
THE CITY OF YOUR FINAL DESTINATION (dir: James Ivory, PG-13) – James Ivory makes his first solo film since the death of his longtime collaborator Ismail Merchant and it looks promising. It stars Anthony Hopkins as a reclusive writer in South America and Laura Linney and Charlotte Gainsbourg also show up. |
DEXTER: SEASON 4 (dir: James Manos Jr., Not Rated) – I hear John Lithgow really perks this season up as a creepy killer. That's good because I'm still bummed about the suckiness of season 2. So bummed, in fact, that I skipped season 3 entirely. |
FURRY VENGEANCE (dir: Roger
Kumble, PG) – Man, Brendan Fraser is the coolest. He gets a script about CGI animals beating him up and he jumps at it. Dude just doesn't care anymore. He didn't even storm off set when he found out Brooke Shields would be co-starring. |
THE LAST SONG (dir: Julie Anne Robinson, PG) – Okay, let's get our favorite pyjamas on, a big box of tissues and cry our little eyes out to this Miley Cyrus
sudser. It'll be the best sleep over ever. |
*THE LOTTERY (dir: Madeleine
Sackler, Not Rated) – Here's a documentary full of horrifying details about literacy rates among inner city kids. This follows four of them as they try to earn a prestigious place in charter schools. |
^ME & ORSON WELLES (dir: Richard
Linklater, PG-13) – Can somebody tell that tool Zac Efron to stop trying to be an
actor? He's just a little singing and dancing monkey and he needs to know he's never going to be taken seriously by anybody over the age of fetus. (I do kind of want to see that new one that I can't remember the name of but refer to as GHOST BRO) |
MULTIPLE SARCASMS (dir: Brooks Branch, R) –
Timothy Hutton, Dana Delaney and Mira Sorvino star in this comedy with maybe the worst title in film history. Since they obviously didn't blow the budget on the cast maybe there are some cool CGI animals or something. |
1981 (dir: Ricardo
Trogi, Not Rated) – For the first time in years Film Movement sent us a dud. It had such promise. A coming of age story set in early 80s Quebec. I thought this was a no-brainer. Unfortunately, the whimsical tone of the movie was overcooked and the narration was so annoying I bailed out halfway through. |
TOWARDS ZERO (dir: Pascal Thomas, Not Rated) – Agatha Christie fans rejoice. Instead of another dreary Masterpiece Theater production, here's one made by French people. |
