NEW
MOVIES! AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 6, 2010
THE AGE OF STUPID (dir: Franny Armstrong, Not Rated) – Pete
Postlethwaite stars in this pseudo-documentary as a man in the
future looking back on archival footage to determine why people in
2008 did nothing to stop global warming. From the director of
McLIBEL and DROWNED OUT. |
BODY/ANTIBODY (dir: Kerry Douglas Dye / Jordan , Not Rated) – An
obsessive compulsive shut-in sees his anti-septic world turned
upside down when he falls for his new neighbor in this low budget
comedy. |
DARK AND STORMY NIGHT (dir: Larry
Blamire, Not Rated) – From
the makers of the wannabe cult classic LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA
comes another genre spoof. This time they tackle Agatha Christie
whodunits. |
DARK ARC (dir: Dan
Zukovic, Not Rated) – I've
got no idea why this indie about a bizarre love triangle is getting
a release after sitting on a shelf for almost 7 years. I do know
that I don't intend to find out. |
FRENCH FILM (dir: Jackie
Oudney, Not Rated) – An
English guy tries to save his ailing relationship by stealing ideas
from romantic French movies. Then some other trite stuff happens. |
GROUP SEX (dir: Lawrence Trilling, R) – Greg
Grunberg, from HEROES and other stuff, wrote the screenplay and
stars in this low budget comedy about, wait for it, the perils of
modern dating. |
HAPPINESS RUNS (dir: Adam Sherman, Not Rated) – Andie
McDowell and B&G's fave Rutger Hauer star in this indie coming
of age story set on a hippie commune. |
HARRY BROWN (dir: Daniel Barber, R) – This
is literally the British GRAN TORINO. And I hate when people misuse
the word literally. Anyway, enjoy watching Michael Caine mess up
some hoodlums. |
KILLING TONI (dir: Kevin Brunelle / Jim
Doiron, Not Rated) – Here's
another locally made gem. This one's about about a really bad break up. Not for the
easily offended. |
LETTERS TO GOD (dir: David Nixon, PG) – A
little kid with cancer writes some letters to you-know-who and still
either dies or doesn't. Inspiring, though. |
MARMADUKE (dir: Tom
Dey, PG) – Owen
Wilson's going to find himself removed from my Christmas card list
if he keeps up this nonsense. |
SHIRIN (dir: Abbas
Kiarostami, Not Rated) – I
know Abbas Kiarostami is one of the greatest living directors and
everything but nobody wants to watch a filmed play where you only
see the audience. That's too much. I bet Manohla Dargis loved it
though. |
SWEETGRASS (dir: Ilisa Barbash / Lucien
Castaing-Taylor, Not Rated) – This documentary is a lot like
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN without the gay dudes. Seriously, it's 2 hours of
sheep milling about. |
*WHO KILLED NANCY (dir: Alan G. Parker, Not Rated) – It's
not important who did it, just that someone did. Man, was she
annoying. |
^YOO-HOO, MRS. GOLDBERG (dir: Aviva Kempner, Not Rated) – Largely
forgotten now, Gertrude Berg was a pioneering radio writer and
performer who basically invented the sitcom in 1949. This
documentary from the director of THE LIFE & TIMES OF HANK
GREENBERG sets the record straight. |
