NEW MOVIES!  DECEMBER 28, 2010 - JANUARY 3, 2011

*THE AMERICAN (dir: Anton Corbijn, R) – Who doesn't love sexy hit man assassins on their last mission for blood? Follow George Clooney through this 'thinker' of a sexy thriller. Clooney is like a fine wine, that just gets more delicious with age.

AND SOON THE DARKNESS (dir: Marcos Efron, R) – Hollywood bad girl Amber Heard and her friend fail to use the buddy system on a trip to Argentina with disastrous results.

HANDSOME HARRY (dir: Bette Gordon, R) – A Navy vet must honor the wish of his dying friend and open up some old wounds to find out what really happened on that night thirty years ago.
HELENA FROM THE WEDDING (dir: Joseph Infantolino, Not Rated) – A newlywed couple host a New Year's party at a mountain cabin that goes all wrong when an uninvited guest shows up. No, it's not a horror film. It's just a drama full of awkward moments from Film Movement.

THE HORDE (dir: Yannick Dahan / Benjamin Rocher, Not Rated) – What’s worse than a horde of zombies? A horde of French zombies. Insert racist joke here. Finally a movie about zombies! The undead don’t care if you’re good or you’re bad, they just want to eat you.

IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS (dir: Alex Holdridge, Not Rated) – A lonely, broke young man just wants to spend New Year's Eve alone but his pesky friends have some matchmaking in mind. This indie has been kicking around the film festival circuit for a couple of years but finally makes its debut on DVD just in time for the big night.
^LET IT RAIN (dir: Agnes Jaoui, Not Rated) – What’s worse than French zombies? French feminists! I kid, but seriously, there is nothing worse than French feminist zombies. Quick witted and well written, this may be your foreign film of the year.

MAP OF THE SOUNDS OF TOKYO (dir: Isabel Coixet, Not Rated) – Every review I read about this Tokyo-set drama went out of its way to point out that it is nothing like LOST IN TRANSLATION. So even though it's set in Tokyo and about a foreign man romancing a much younger woman, that's the end of any similarities.

THE MILK OF SORROW (dir: Claudia Llosa, Not Rated) – It's too depressing to tell you what the "milk of sorrow" actually is, so let's just pretend that this Peruvian film is a romantic comedy.
RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE (dir: Paul W.S. Anderson, R) – While the majority of moviegoers still don't appreciate the talents of Milla Jovovich, she has the zombie fan demographic on lockdown. She can keep making these things forever.

SKIRT DAY (dir: Jean-Paul Lilienfeld, Not Rated) – Isabelle Adjani returns to the screen after five years for this thriller in which she plays a fed-up high school teacher who holds her class hostage until they learn to appreciate Moliere.

SPIN (dir: Henry Pincus, R) – Six Los Angelenos have differing memories of one wild night in this indie drama that owes a great debt to BODY SHOTS. Although instead of Tara Reid we get Bijou Phillips, which is sort of an upgrade.

TWELVE (dir: Joel Schumacher, R) – Pop Culture Icon 50-Cent lost some amount of weight for this feature, forcing his crew to refer to him as 25-Cent. It's all about the truth bombs that can only be found on the street.
