MARIUS (dir: Alexander Korda / Marcel Pagnol, Not Rated) - Bart says, "Most people will tell you that each film in Marcel Pagnol's FANNY trilogy is better than the last, but I'm going to stand behind the first film as the best. You need to watch the whole trilogy to get the cumulative emotional impact, but MARIUS stands quite well on its own as a portrait of life in the port city of Marseilles at the beginning of the 20th Century. It's a compelling story of a boy who has to decide which he loves more - the neighbor girl he's known all his life or life at sea - but it's mostly the colorful and carefully detailed secondary characters and their trivial bits of business that draw you into the film. For those of you who love Claude Berri's adaptations of Pagnol's JEAN DE FLORETTE and MANON OF THE SPRING from 1986, give this much earlier series a shot."

THE SMILING LIEUTENANT (dir: Ernst Lubitsch, Not Rated) - Bart says, "You'll never know how sexy a song about breakfast food can be until you watch Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert sing it to each other in this pre-code Lubitsch comedy that's shockingly immoral, even by today's standards. Chevalier's at his sleazy best as the lovable cad who has to marry foreign princess Miriam Hopkins to protect his country's reputation, much to his girlfriend Colbert's chagrin."
