SNOW
WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (dir: David Hand, Not Rated) -
Michelle says, "What is it with that trope of Grimm fairytales
about sweet, beautiful maidens who lose their mothers and become the
abused possessions of wicked stepmothers? Why is there always a cast
of helpful animals or little people or a fairy godmother on hand to
help the prince and the girl get together? Why does the girl always
happily clean houses till she passes out and needs to be awakened by
a kiss? Disney, what the hell are you doing to our children? I guess
that I shouldn’t complain. Watching this with my kid one day will
engender teaching moments about gender, dwarfs, and hot
queens." |

DRÔLE
DE DRAME (dir: Marcel
Carné, Not Rated) - Bart says,
"Marcel
Carné, along with his
celebrated screenwriter Jacques Prévert,
indeed achieved their apotheosis of greatness with CHILDREN OF
PARADISE (a film you should watch annually, if you don't already),
but you should know that their collaborative contributions to cinema
extend far beyond a single masterpiece. Many of their films are not
yet available on DVD in the US, but the ones that are, including the
dark, tragic pre-Noir PORT OF SHADOWS and this absurdist satire of
the upper classes, are essential viewing. Fans of Luis
Buñuel and Monty Python take note: this very funny film is for
you." |
