THE SQUID AND THE WHALE (dir: Noah Baumbach, R) - Thom says, "Easily one of my top three films of the decade, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE features Jeff Daniels’ best performance yet – must have something to do with his rad beard. Noah Baumbach (KICKING AND SCREAMING, MARGOT AT THE WEDDING) wrote and directed this masterpiece; Baumbach co-wrote THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU and THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX with Wes Anderson, and there are times in SQUID where that sensibility comes out - especially in the use of old-ish easy-folk music and the way that conversations often start at one location and are finished after a cut to another. The main difference between Baumbach and Anderson is that Baumbach manages to reach an emotional depth that Anderson hasn’t yet been able to show. At times sad, hilarious, thoughtful, and harrowing (often all four at once) SQUID AND THE WHALE is the only review in which I have only had one joke."
4 (dir: Ilya Khrjanovsky, Not Rated) - Bart says, "I honestly love this film. I know you're going to watch this slow-paced, vaguely-plotted, symbol-heavy Russian movie and say that I claim to like it just to be perverse or to demonstrate what a sophisticated cinephile I am. Not true. This movie's beautiful and compelling and funny and unlike anything else I've ever seen. And it's all about how the human body is nothing more than meat. So go ahead, give this movie a try. You might be sorry you did, but then again maybe you won't."
